Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

Unusable again. Been for most of the month.

But this is where it gets odd.

Then a few minutes later...

Imo, these speed tests are a waste of life and full of lies.
They simply throttle everything else and prioritize these speed tests.
It's not a true reflection of your internet speed.
Call them and find out if something is maybe wrong with your line or there's an issue on their side.
Don't pay good money for something you can't even benefit from.

For anyone that wants to signup for the 4mb uncapped promo and wants to know what the usage is like.
I had crappy speeds for like 2-3 days max this month but usually it gets fixed after a reboot of the router or on its own towards the end of the day.
Torrents have always been full speed for me whenever I wanted to download something. (I don't torrent much)
Ping can be really bad at times, but at times gaming performance is excellent.
Streaming is always good also.
I hope this helps. :)

Thanks so much, guy.
I was considering swopping from my Afrihost to this 4mb promo.
Looks like I'll be going ahead with it :)

Was the traceroute done immediately before or after the traceroute that exhibited the latency?

It may be better to run mtr or winmtr or pingplotter for a suitable duration to be able to identify where the latency is introduced.
Immediately after. I've been running Smoking for a while now, and the latency stays the same.

Yeah past two weeks or so Telkom been bad. Pages stop loading 80% of the way, always require refresh ie. uses more bandwidth than needed etc. Hopefully it sorts itself. High latency.

There was some buffering on Showmax yesterday afternoon but no stuttering on my 10Mbps capped, seems the Seacom break has resulted in most ISPs experiencing minor problems due to re-routing.

Yeah I avoid seacom ISPs since seacom breaks more than a old Alfa.

I just recently re-activated my ADSL line after a short but disastrous stint on LTE. I was previously on a capped package, but this time I signed up for Telkom Uncapped (10Mbps). So far the performance has been disappointing. Download speeds rarely sustain 50% line speed and even between midnight and 6 am speeds only improve to about 60-70% of line speed. Even then it's not constant. Is this due to the Seacom issues or is this normal for Telkom uncapped packages these days?

Telkom Internet doesn't have capacity on Seacom.

Between midnight and 6AM network utilisation is/was less than 40% of peak utilisation, so there would be no shaping.

What do you get on speedtests at the same time.

How are you downloading? Bittorrent?

Have you tried the 'priority pass' button on customerportal.telkomsa.net? It will remove the protocol-based shaping (while you are not under FUP throttling), if that doesn't improve things, there us some other issue. Insufficient peers/seeds?

Thanks for reply @ranger. Speedtest.net consistently gives around 9Mbps although upstream speeds vary from 0.2 to about 0.8Mbps. Most of my downloading is usenet (paid server) and http downloads using file hosting services (premium memberships) so I should be able to achieve close to linespeed. I do use bittorrent, but very rarely.

I haven't tried the priority pass button. I don't currently have anything I need to download, but will try that next time.
