Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

Anyone else in Cape Town battling with TI today?

I'm on Telkom Uncapped and my internet is absolutely abysmal currently. Disconnects like every 10mins...

Edit: been running an Afrihost temp account for about an hour now without issues, so definitely a Telkom issue somewhere.

Same problems this here, oh well smile and wave until the fibre rollout in our complex is finished I guess.

What disconnects? PPP session?

Well, mine (in Northern suburbs) is fine as (mostly) usual.

Anyone else getting smses every 10 minutes saying their data has been paused and you are using out of bundle data and must choose an option, even though the data still works? This is for those with the homeunlimited and using the telkom sim that gives them 2gb data a month. Since the past few days I've getting smsed constantly with it. Now I log into telkom profile and also see I can't access areas of the platform because "I haven't used my account yet" but I clearly am and the data is being logged in the platform showing me using it. I'm so confused. Calling them tomorrow.

I'm getting it too, will try and ask someone in the know about it tomorrow.

Seriously high pings across the board. Swap to Webafrica, no issues :/ why does this happen all the time? It's gonna be like this for 2 weeks again before it gets fixed...

Anyone reach the FUP cap on the 4mbps package? Does your speed decrease after reaching 180gb?

Got the same issues, cant wait for my fiber to arrive.

All i can recommend, is that AXXESS has very cheap uncapped dsl accounts. You can get a 1mb/s account for R44 for a whole month. I get 180-190ms on AXXESS to most of EU, where as my telkom sits at 230ms at the best of times, and lately has been 300ms normally.

So i just use that axxess for gaming, and my telkom for downloading.

Nothing else can really be done. You try comminate this information to telkom, and they will talk about sending a engineer over to check the line, when its CLEARLY not the line if another dsl account has no issues at all.

The average internet user knows more about how the internet works and functions than 90% of telkom sadly.

Unfortunately, while Telkom Internet makes up > 50% of Telkom Wholesale's international transit business, there is little ability to influence this, and some prefixes (of TI user IPs) are advertised via non-optimal paths to suit Telkom Wholesale's capacity rather than provide best experience to TI users. Projects that should have improved the situation have probably stalled after changes in leadership in Telkom Retail.

Here I think you mean "Telkom call centre", which is *not* Telkom :-(.

Because of the amount of IPC capacity TI had, lead times for even a 10% capacity increase had in the past been measured in months, and it was possible for small changes in demand patterns to result in demand getting ahead of capacity delivery by a few weeks.

I need some advise every night from 8:30 onwards things start going bad. Speed drops to a trickle and latency spikes over 100ms. I spoke to Telkom they said that the exchange can take about a 1000 more adsl line. We have 2 exchanges and I am apparently connected to the one that's not congested. This happens on both my Telkom uncapped and Afrihost capped accounts.

He mentioned that I am connected to ME or metro something technology. Can anyone perhaps tell me what that is?

Very much mean telkom.

Telkom and its employees are the least educated of all the ISPS, fact mate.

It is very unlikely that you have had any interaction with any Telkom (not Openserve, BCX or WNS) employees who currently work at the ISP, unless you mean here (e.g. streaker who sometimes posts here who is), so I wonder how you would be able to substantiate this claim, whereas I will provide one counter-example:

Afrihost doesn't employ their own network engineers, they outsourced the routing aspects to Echo and the traffic management to three6five (where Telkom Internet has skills similar to or better than both of those in-house).

Yes that will work, but for a non-technical user it's easier to reboot.
A non-technical user needn't do anything. If it were necessary for all users to stop using the TI IP anycast DNS (105.225.0.1, 105.225.0.2), TI would disconnect the user's sessions.

(And there are disadvantages to using Google's DNS here, it is technically impossible to reliably make all CDNs deployed inside the network work for users who use Google DNS).

ranger, I consistently get poor throughout when loading GIFs from gfycat's network, which makes up about a quarter of all shared GIFs on Reddit. Who can I contact/email to see if throughput or a more efficient path could be worked on?

Provide (post here is fine):
- an example image url that seems slow
- a traceroute to the host portion of the URL
- any custom settings you are using (specifically which DNS IP addresses ypu are using if you aren't using the defaults, as the source IPs those servers use can affect how CDNs serve you)

If you have seen it perform better from a different connection, posting similar info for comparison would be useful.
