Telkom Internet Softcap Feedback

Would appreciate feedback :-).

Ran usual applications and all running as awesome as can be :). PS4 downloads were snappy [possibly due to their maintenance too] , browsing was really quick [opened CNN / BBC videos in HD and no buffering]. Played a few minutes of Planetside 2 on the console and their connection status in the game on the upper left shows as "bad" lol , this may be a number of reasons so will test further.

Perhaps a slight edit on the page should have a disclaimer saying "This feature does NOT change your synch speed" just for those who may not immediately get it :).

Let me ask, what sort of issues would one experience though or should look out for?

This is using a 10Mbps line [as per my screenshots above]. I made a short video around 1130 today so will upload later. :)

Why you guys teasing on the higher upload speeds past 4Mbps?

p2p low :(

Would have liked it a bit higher since it is a capped account.

What does this feature actually do @ranger

It allows to enable prioritisation of some of your traffic over some of your other traffic, e.g. youtube over p2p or online game traffic over web browsing. It doesn't affect how your traffic is prioritised relative to other traffic. Since there is no QoS on the adsl network, this won't fix problems in the access network, and requires us to be the bottleneck for it to work, thus the need for users to configure their achievable speeds.

Reducing/removing the shaping of p2p on capped is coming soon (but has nothing to do with this feature), I would prefer to wait for the delivery of our IPC upgrade we are.paying for but haven't received yet, but depending on the effects of some other operational improvements that went in this week we may be able to do the change in advance of the upgrades.

So I selected my line speed and it now shows my line speed has been selected. How would that compare to for example to someone that did not select their line speed?

Why do I need to select my line speed? What if I just select like the 100Mbps profile for example will this mean I would get full speed on everything on my 10Mbps line :D

Weird thing is my torrents are actually running at line speed, I would have thought I would take a knock there (maybe I should just have kept this quiet), youtube is performing better than before. This is on a uncapped account.

You won't be able to exceed the speeds you select. If you have a 4Mbps line syncing at 4096 and you choose 3072 down, you won't be able to get more than 3Mbps. If you choose nothing, we don't artificially limit your speed or try to prioritise anything for you.

Why do I need to select my line speed?

To be able to prioritise, the bottleneck needs to know what to drop. The adsl network can't know what to drop, so we need to be the bottleneck. We could in theory query your sync speed, but we didn't get approval for that, and we wanted users to be able to change it themselves.

No, you will see no benefit because we will allow 100Mbps, but the edge router or dslam will drop 90% of the
traffic at random. Single-connection TCP-based protocols will suffer the most (p2p will win).

And no, you can't bypass the soft-cap throttling, but it may make it a bit more useable.

It shouldn't reduce p2p if there isn't traffic of higher priority. It doesn't limit a priority, just guarantees 25% (or 256k, whichever is greater) for the highest priority.

Wrong thread :-p.

ranger, I'm excited to use my TI 50GB softcap from 00h00 tonight (capped since the 20th or so).

I haven't felt this way about TI capped for over 2 years. It's a good feeling to have back.

Thanks for all your hard work.

I get that.

Why wrong thread because we get the same options in the menu? Does it affect things differently between capped & uncappped accounts?

@cavedog - haha, read my mind, i wanted to try 100Mbps but knew there was a catch :o.

@ranger - Do the changes ahead of the upgrade :D , you guys are bringing the service back to how it was before the network change and boy, could we use the internet ;) .

FTTH - someday ranger, someday

This is interesting , please tell us more ?

@PostmanPot - I know that feeling :D , am doing the same.

Other posters usually complain if softcap is discussed in the uncapped thread, and see the smily (OK let's try the image one: :p), and other users there may benefit from the feature. I believe an announcement if this feature is coming, not sure exactly when ...

Works very similarly. For uncapped, depending on feedback, we may make the prioritisation feature work by default, users would then only need to set the speed if they sync at a lower speed than their product (e.g. 4Mbps uncapped account syncing at 3.5Mbps).

Ah ok missed that :D

Default or not at least leave it optional so people can opt in/out I reckon.

Can somebody tell me how the Do Gaming add on works.
I've just upgraded to a 20mb line with a 50gb cap, I paid for the Do Gaming add on because I was under the impression that any data downloaded from PSN, Steam or Xbox Live would be uncapped yet I started downloading a game on PSN and its deducting from my 50gb cap?

It should not. With PSN I also picked up data leaking and being deducted from my softcap. Was reported many times but Telkom never fixed it. So with PSN it's give or take but works well with Steam.

Thanks for the reply Cavedog.

I bought it mainly for PSN so this is going to be pretty annoying for me, I don't mind downloading the games during Nightsurfer time but the 1-5 gig patches during the day are going to be a problem.

I know. We need @ranger to plz look into this. Not sure how we going to get the IP's that are leaking the data to the softcap but it needs to get fixed or the do gaming addon is totally useless and not to mention misleading....
