i hope i dont Jinx it but for the first time in weeks i was able to watch a 480p YouTube video and play Guild Wars 2 without any lag last night. (btw i got a 10Mb uncapped line)

Thx to the guys at Telkom whatever you are doing, its working keep it up and i might stay with Telkom !
 
Anyone having problems opening webpages? Every page I try open say Page cannot be displayed.
I know my internet connection is working becoz I'm on my PC via Teamview and my torrents are still running.... WTF?

EDIT: False alarm. A router reboot fixed it :)

RE-EDIT: Problem is back! Looks like an DNS issue. If I try going to www.google.co.za it says page cant be displayed.
But if I put 184.170.128.58 [google.com IP] in it loads. Thereafter I can get to Google by typing in the sites name.

Anyone else with the same problem on Ti?

Nope.
Everything is fine on my side using Chrome and default TI dns settings.

You could try

Thanks Jeanres, the Google DNS fixed it for me. I wonder whats causing it?
Maybe its just the Durban area.

Hey Yuu, hows your browwsing with Telkom DNS? Working or not??

Maybe some routing issue / or DNS cache.

Sounds like a routing issue but I cant be sure. I never had to use Google DNS before as my ISP's DNS always worked fine.
Maybe Ranger can spread some light on the situation for me

First, rule out the modem.

1)What are the DNS settings on the modem?

It should be using the DNS IPs received from the PPPoE, which should be two of the IP addresses listed here.

If this is not the case, what are your DNS settings on the modem?

2)If the settings are correct, put the DNS IPs the modem is using (it should be two of the IP addresses listed ) in your PC's settings, and see if that helps.

3)If that doesn't help, please supply the IP addresses you got from PPPoE.

I'm also having problems browsing with web pages not loading,however I checked my router's dns settings and I saw it changed to 37.1.195.200 and 184.82.223.18.WTF?How the hell did that happen!?Anyway changed it to what its supposed to be and all seems ok again.

Thanks for info. I see that my router in PE is using the Durban DNS server (196.43.54.190) with Rosebank as the secondary server (196.43.38.190).

I thought PE would use the Cape Town server? (196.43.34.190)

I have the "assign automatically" option checked.... so would it choose the best routing every time I reset my router?

It is best not to use a 3rd-party DNS provider, unless you are absolutely sure that the DNS cache is the problem. However, I would first try an alternative SAIX DNS server. I think we are currently assigning wblv-ip-dns and wbs-ip-dns to users in the South, and rrba-ip-dns and rndf-ip-dns to users in the rest of the country (as those should be the closest).

If you use a 3rd-party DNS server, it means that some providers geographical load-balancing won't work. Obviously, if you use Google's DNS cache, it will work for Google's load balancing, but may mean akamai (which is local on SAIX) will not.

I am doing some more extensive testing now, and my results support this. I will try and write a post with more detailed results soon.

Hi Ranger,

The DNS settings were 37.1.195.200 and alt was 184.82.223.18.
Are these correct for Durban?

Whats wierd was, when I couldn't load a web page, I restarted the router and all was well for 15min or so. Also Remote Desktop (teamviewer) worked fine and my torrents were still running when pages wouldn't load.
Needless to say after changing to the Google DNS and its been fine all day.

I've just restored the original DNS settings back, lets see if the problem re-occurs.

EDIT: those DNS settings dont appear correct for Durban according to http://www.saix.net/cgi-bin/saix_dns.pl

I'm editing them to what saix says they should be.
But how the hell did they change??? I know I didn't change them....

Same thing happened to my router. And it looks like the DNS was set manually where as it was always set to automatically assign before....

Anyway router passsword changed, just in case my routers been compromised!
