And yes, it stayed between 5kbps and 15kbps the whole time. Sigh. What the hell. Speedtest shows 3.5mbps downstream (4mbps line).

1Mb/s line,

104 is pretty low :/ But even so I *wish* I could reach that high. Tried again now, and it started at 150, then dropped down to 12 again and stayed there.

I tested YouTube at 720p and that streamed perfectly fine. Netflix streams HD too. Speedtest shows 3.5mbps. But HTTP downloads... urgh.

Indeed. It's not my line though, I tested on other ISP accounts, and they download the same file at 300kbps. Thus also not exchange congestion. Had the same issue last night. After midnight it opened up and I got full speed. Same file again. And the same thing happened with the BF4 preload.
Hoping ranger can figure it out :(

From the traceroute you sent me, you (going through our Cape Town site) are connecting to Akamai servers hosted at MWEB, whereas when I download the same file, I (going through our Gauteng site) get it off Akamai servers hosted at SAIX.

I believe the problem was already reported to Akamai a week or two ago but had had no resolution, and has resulted in increased utilisation on the SAIX<->MWEB peering link. I will follow up.

Surely 104kB/s on a 1Mbps line is good?

Yes, except I'm on a 4mbps line :P Hence the speed test showing 3.5mbps :)

Yes, I know but it was pointed out that 104kB/s was a bit low on a 1Mbps line, which it is not, unless I misunderstood.
Hope you get sorted soon. i see Ranger has answered you.

Ah, I see. Yeah - I meant for me, 104 would be low :P

Yup, ranger is a champion - responded via PM as well and he's looking into it for me. Thanks ranger!

Glitch or grace?
I'd say glitch never happened again for me with Mweb after Jan.

We were doing network maintenance in our Gauteng site during this time, and I believe at about that time had half our IPC capacity in our Gauteng site down.

We repeated the exercise on Sunday morning.

Also, at times some traffic was re-routed to our Cape Town site.

Has it been better since Sunday morning 06h00?

Marginally, but its still not great, I'm in Cape Town though.
The story thus far:

My router reports adsl 2+, max attainable is 21mbps, yet when I phoned last night to have my 4mbps upped to 10mbps, the Telkom techie said my exchange only support 6mbps. What's up with that?

Distance from exchange perhaps? My router reports 10 Mbps, but due to my distance from the exchange, and the amount of exchange congestion, I'll be lucky if I were to see 4mbps.

Surely it was only on Sunday until about 14h20?

Thanks, nice little booste. Whats the quickest way to log a call, currently I get disconnected every few seconds and when i am connected I get speedtest results of 300kbps down and 800kbps up. Multiple router restarts have already occurred.

Nothing, I'm in the same situation but should be able to get +10Mbps sometime next year with the MSAN rollout in my area.

Impossible, I'm about 500m from the msan that connects the whole of edenvale Bedford area to Telkoms backbone jobby.
I was previously only able to get 8mbps with admt or whatever, but I logged a fault and they moved me to a new port, since then my router says adsl 2+,max attainable 21mbps. Snr margin is high, attenuation low.

My uncapped internet has gone badly downhill lately, even http downloads with a download manager are slowish, it goes between 70kbps to 160kbps where my Afrihost spare capped account hits full 190kbps to 210kbps. Their news server is also not great at the moment, currently getting 70kbps but sometimes goes up to 130-140kbps. I haven't even downloaded much in the past few months so I don't think I'm meant to be getting throttled or shaped.
