Telkom Internet Uncapped User Feedback.

Once you reach a certain unknown number, likely month on month you will apparently get an email from Telkom informing you that you are using a disproportionate amount of data that is affecting users that are paying the same as you and using much less data.

As such they will throttle you down to something like 1mb on a 4mb line.

Something like that anyway.

Is this throttling for local usage also?

Does anybody know if you can check what your bandwidth consumption is if you have a TI uncapped account?

So glad TI shape you mofo's who rape the internet...
Viva Telkom Viva.

:)

In all seriousness... I am on 4meg uncapped.. I download and I game...
I do full HD movies... Series and anime...
I don't get close to the figures you guys get...
And whatever is new, in these categories, I grab.

Do you want a noddy badge?

Actually MightyMuffinMan was capped at 360GB on a 2Mbps account which he thought had been upgraded to 4Mbps. Ranger has sorted out the upgrade (posts #1626/1627) and MightyMuffinMan has yet to comment on the upgraded performance.

Well spotted.

I can confirm:

They are softcapping.
All Accounts ragardless of speed are slowed to 512kbps if softcapped (can see notice on Titracker if softcapped). According to ranger its ONLY reduction in speed. However practical terms only basic connectivity which could be bug.

I did about 390 GB (which if one considers is very reasonable however issue is softcapping rendered my line unusable) total up and down before being soft capped on 2 meg line.

Now that I'm 4 meg line is not softcapped (dunno if account gets reset or if I'm below softcapping limit). So 4 meg is currently unknown.

I think ranger will sort out problem with connectivity when softcapped.

Edit: as for upgraded performance. I'm not around to use line for next few days so stay tuned and I'll post Monday)

So then what do you get or average rather per month. If you don't mind me asking

A new version of tracker was just deployed. Some post-implementation testing is still being done, but it now works for me (where it didn't in the past), and uncapped users can now see an indication of their usage, and should see a warning before their service is degraded.

No, not all accounts are slowed to the same speed. This is the difference between Soft-capped, and Uncapped. On Soft-capped, after you have used your cap, you get one speed regardless of what cap you had. The slowest uncapped packages get a similar speed to the Soft-capped packages when their usage has been deemed unfair, but faster packages get faster speeds (and business uncapped packages mostly get faster speeds than consumer uncapped packages).

Business uncapped packages also would be able to use more before their usage is deemed unfair than the equivalent consumer package.

boom.

"The bandwidth consumption on your uncapped account has reached a stage whereby it is having a negative impact on the general performance of our network"

Seems that ~350Gb is the limit on 4Mb lines.

1Mb = 125Gb
2Mb = 250Gb
4Mb = 350Gb

So a 4Mb line can do around 1Tb a month of usage if you download 24x7 at max speed. That means that

1Mb = 125Gb is 50% of theoretical max of 250Gb a month
2Mb = 250Gb is 50% of theoretical max of 500Gb a month
4Mb = 350Gb is 35% of theoretical max of 1000Gb a month.

Telkom, I've been supporting your account for a very long time and I stayed with you when you first did the unannounced capping after the swop over. But I'm sorry, I will happily pay more for OpenWeb Gold now and support and recommend them.

or NOT!

According to SAIX I have done less than 200GB?

My speedtests have been stupid the whole week.

SAIX says I can dl at 54Mbps
Speedtest and Pingtest does not want to complete the tests

MY speedtest stand still for 20 seconds then zooms to whatever reading is given. The needle moves to fast to follow.
Not sure if the new policy has anything to do with it.

International.
Test conducted on 4/26/2013 12:53:15 AM

Download Speed: 2858 kbps (357.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 375 kbps (46.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 232 ms

Local:
Test conducted on 4/26/2013 12:58:03 AM

Download Speed: 3346 kbps (418.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 410 kbps (51.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 72 ms

Seems I'm loosing about 70 - 80KB/s on international due to shaping, unless something else is up.
