Did it affect all users or only TI customers?

This issue wasn't impacting people going through the Cape Town site as much (which I think may include you?).

Everyone else (Gauteng, KZN etc.) were affected, mainly afternoon and evenings.

You are correct, I'm going through Cape Town.
Does the upgrade only impact TI ISP users?

This is the crap I'm getting,

Speeds are highly erratic and fluctuate a lot jumping all over the show, looks like very bad shaping. I'm use to these valuse sitting at a constant 100K/s region. Opening a large image in a browser is also very jerky, you can see parts loading slow and fast.

Does it look any better now? Granted, this is weekend, but traffic levels are about as high now as during a weekday ...

If not, please provide the mirror you are using, and a traceroute to it may also be useful (btw., iftop is sometimes the easiest way to identify what server you are actually using, especially with geo-load-balanced mirror URLs, CDNs, youtube etc.).

Apologies for the double post.

Could someone possibly please give me some insight with the following issue.

I used to get approximately the same DL speeds as when I did International and Local speedtests.
The last 3 weeks or so I get 3.3Mbps dl speed on Local, but only 2.82 on International.

The speeds are constant.
Using a differen ISP via PPoE from the desktop, yiels basically same results.

I know it is not a huge difference, but I'm a bit OCD that way.
:D

Big difference! Looks & behaves normal now! Shot!

Ignore the speed values for the small files as they don't give a accurate measure of dl speed.

Im getting +/- 880KBps on usenet at the moment, neigh bad. Now to see what titracker does...

Switching from IS to TI, there are some interesting changes.

On IS Usenet tends to run 100% of linespeed whenever. Torrents die during business hours and pick up around 7pm.

On TI, Usenet doesn't seem as fast (2 connections = slower?). Torrents seem less shaped during business hours and are fine after hours.
Perhaps the faster torrent during business hours causes usenet to run slower? I thought any ISP would prefer traffic from it's news server over international torrent traffic.

I'm now in the Orange zone, almost halfway to Power User status. I only got this account active about a week ago :o

I'll keep an eye on shaping/throttling to see if/when it kicks in.

EDIT: I can't find reference to 'Bulk downloads' from the AUP: http://business.telkom.co.za/enterprise/broadband-internet/downloads/TelkomInternetAUP.doc

Your current internet usage pattern shows continuous bulk downloads over prolonged periods. This is in contravention of the Telkom Internet Acceptable Use Policy and as such your account will be managed in a manner that allows us to optimise network efficiency for all users.

So I finally got around to phoning DSL technical support today. And it turns out my line is slower because someone had set it to 1.5 instead of 2...I can only imagine this was done when I phoned in after being throttled in Feb being told to log-in to the Usage Tracker to acknowledge that I was being throttled which I couldn't do cuz the Usage Tracker was down so I was without net and needed help.

Anyways the tech reset me to 2 and now my router is again showing the correct 2040 kbps downstream and I'm speedtesting at ~1.6-1.74MBPS on speedtest.net like I was before and http downloads are back to 200-216kb/s.

I hope it's not a general unmentioned policy by Telkom to silently downgrade the accounts of perceived heavy users (especially cuz that was just 1 month).

Oh well, for now all is right again with the world.

So, yesterday I phoned Telkom to upgrade my account and line from 1Mbps to 2Mbps. All went well, I get 2Mbps, and I'm happy, however, I Noticed my Uncapped account is still running at 1Mbps. I phoned in, and after being transferred a few times, I was told I have to wait till next month, as they will charge me for both Do Uncapped basic, and do uncapped Advanced if i upgrade now. Do I have to wait till next month in order for my uncapped account to be upgraded to a 2Mbps account? I just upgraded my line, why can't my uncapped account be upgraded as well?

Anyone else made the same switch recently? Do you experience the same behaviour?

It now seems as if I'm throttled to about 80% of linespeed. I'll try a speed test with everything else shutdown this evening.

Hey,

Any shaping happening on Telkom Uncapped ADSL 4mb line in JHB (East Rand Area) around P2P traffic?

Anyone got the same thing going around? Or is it just me?

EDIT: Major P2P traffic shaping going on here. Torrents struggling to download metadata just to start with. Failing to connect to trackers.

No, this is just plain incompetence, the agent you spoke to used the tools they knew to do something different than they should be used for instead of logging a ticket to a team that could resolve your problem.

Hey,

Any shaping happening on Telkom Uncapped ADSL 4mb line in JHB (East Rand Area) around P2P traffic?

There has been a massive increase in traffic or Windows updates, climbing from 06h00 this morning to peak at 09h00 at more than 20 times the bandwidth usually used for Windows updates. By 12h00 it dropped to be between 6 and 10 times the normal capacity used for Windows updates.

(P2P has the lowest priority, we previously had some bulk transfer protocols including windows updates with P2P, but then everyone complained that they couldn't patch, or install apps from the various mobile app stores etc., as P2P doesn't play fair)

So, no, we are not doing "Major shaping of P2P".

2 things:

1. Why has torrent DL's gone to shyte today? (checked my stats - still green)

Because yesterday was Patch Tuesday?

Migrate more of your friends to platforms that release bugfixes and security updates more frequently, instead of keeping users vulnerable until a one-day-a-month release.
