As a linux user I use the transmission bittorrent client so I can't help with uTorrent ... but:

I'm using the TI DNS servers - can't say google's 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 DNS make any difference for me.

Hope the following settings are of help:

check your incoming port is open

don't overdo active downloads

I have temp speed limits turned on during the day so torrents don't impact my normal work - adjust yours to suit your line speed

Ok so changed my incoming port number...and bam, and i am speeding away, downloading...Thanks!

So this is the problem I have been having the past few months (since the IP range swap over in March).
I formatted my PC on Sunday. My internet is useless but the shaping to speedtest.net doesn't effect it.

After a port reset and being assured that everything is OK by the operator I still have this problem.

On the left my speedtest.net result. on the right my Teamspeak ping, same happens with any game or application.

Heres a ping test to mweb and bbc

And a Dota2 ingame screenshot to a local server

Guess its time to move away from Telkom, no point in paying thousands of rands for a 56k speeds

You just compared pinging a local server to pinging the UK.

Also try a traceroute to see where the problem lies. My money is first and foremost on DNS routing issues.

Well the ping to the local www.mweb.co.za still had a average of 1800(suggesting that its a local problem and not an international routing one(as was previously the case when Telkom just switched over to the new IP ranges). The first screen shot was just to show that speedtest.net doesnt give any information on the problem, while the teamspeak next to it, which goes to internet solutions shows the ping spike. The Sota2 pic was just to an mweb local server(but was taken a couple of days ago).

here are the tracert to the same servers, but when the internet is working.(note these spikes are not permanent but almost daily from between 19:00 - 02:00)

mweb: http://i43.tinypic.com/k1e61t.jpg

bbc: http://i42.tinypic.com/2wp2gcm.jpg

just cuz it's a local domain doesn't mean it's hosted locally

it does indeed seem the traceroutes are fine though so yeah, not routing I guess.

and I'm busy maxing out my line on torrents and I still got better ping results than you XD
so there definitely is some problem there

Back when we had local caps as well I loved the flagfox extension cuz it always told me exactly where a site was actually coming from.
And then I used to test whether the international cap was used up by going on a site like IGN and then trying BTGames and if BTGames worked and IGN didn't then I knew the cap was gone, if it didn't then I knew there was some net problem.

ahhhh Telkom....
IT just works
and works
and works
and works
and works
and works
and works
:D

I've been having the same issues and it's the local caching server that's up to crap, not Telkom itself. I followed this method and everything works perfectly - although downloading videos is a hit and miss thing.

I don't know what you're referring to by 'local caching server that's up to crap', as what you have done here is block the Youtube multicast servers, which we usually get from the UK, and that forces the player to use the local Youtube cache servers located on SAIX.

*sigh*

Telkom Uncapped is great when it works, and unusable when it doesn't. 10Mb line, 4MB Uncapped, struggling to load the forum, can't VPN into the office and I need to work... can't even load speedtest this morning.

Hi ranger

With respect, kindly advise why Telkom International capped accounts have gone to absolute ****?

I'm almost ready to cancel my 10Mbit/20GB (Do 3) and investigate some sort of refund based on lack of service.

It's pathetic.

ranger,

Why is it that some people can download torrents during the day at full speed while others are completely dead?
