I don't feel so bad now...

The strange thing is in the mornings and during the day my connection is fine. I'm thinking about giving up and going back to the 2mb account where I had no issues at all.

I have the same problem as you and Awesum.
During the morning and day till around 3pm I get full line speed (3.43MB as per speedtest) thenI can watch the speed degrade till it reaches around 1MB. This continues till around 10 or 11pm and then its back to normal.
TelkomZA says that the Master uplink on my DSLAM is congested and that Telkom is aware of the issue and they will be fixing it.
I wish he could give me an ETA tho :(

Funny thing is when I was on 2MB I can't remember a time when I wasn't getting full line speed regardless of the time of day or night.

Speedtest done at 7am this morning :)

Lets see how it fairs as then day goes on

We south africans really do condone (through complacency) the worst of treatment. Imagine if a plumber pitches to fix your geyser and can't tell you when he will be finished.

my PSN downloads kept failing so I configured it with an open DNS... without wanting to jinx it.. it seems to be working since I assigned those DNS servers.
Once it completes I will post here for you to add to your router, as will I.

Thanx Demon, this really worked for me

Hi Ranger

Fernglen PE speeds this evening on 10meg uncapped, rivaling 56k dial-up.

Line stats perfect. First issue since joining a month ago.

Live on top of the DSLAM.

Any ideas why it's crawling ?

I'm also still sitting with browsing issue's.
Line stats and test are good, but browsing is terrible. The pages would time out and then suddenly come alive or it would take forever to open the page. Sometimes it would say that the page does not exist or has been moved and that it could be some resolution error.

Facebook pages would load without any pics or videos.

still going.. small update.. 627MB but kept failing on about 20%...
currently on 56% after changing DNS server address.

75% now
completed first time without an error...
After countless attempts for days now.

Hmm, there is no reason why DNS should in itself cause a download to fail at 20%.

We did hear from people at SAIX that the load average on their dns servers in Cape Town dropped over the past few days. So ghere mah be a problem preventing some user's DNS requests from reaching the DNS servers.

It is preferable to use one of the IPs listed at http://www.saix.net/cgi-bin/saix_dns.pl rather than opendns.

Seems some people working via CT (those in PE, EL etc) are having issues. Saw someone change their DNS settings to those of OpenDNS and things came right for them.

Have you reported it as a fault yet? Once done, send a PM to user TelkomZA together with your ADSL line number and contact details.

I reported it a short while ago via the online web fault reporting tool and the studious TI agent closed the fault almost immediately sending me the following mail:

***********

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for emailing Telkom Internet Technical Support.

Please note that your line is 10mbps, did check from the system and your line speed seems to be fine and also recreated the port. Please note that the speed is not guaranteed and most unlikely to browse at full speed. It mostly depend on the congestion on the exchange and other factors.

However you can go to the following website http://www.speedtest.netand run a speed test after getting the results you can contact 10210 option 1 and then 1 again for fault reporting or on https://secureapp.telkom.co.za/assurance/public/troubleshooter.Alternatively you may send an sms with your faulty landline number to 0123210212 to have the line and exchange tested.

Kind Regards

Telkom Internet Support

With tears in my eyes I have tested the connection with my 1gig backup MWEB account and everything is FINE. Full speed ahead. No issues. So clearly line and DSLAM are fine.

Definitely a serious problem with TI uncapped in my PE area this evening.

Ticket #388148 remains open. Ranger, TelkomZA, help ?

Down in Paarl - "primer test failed". Cannot even get Speedtest to start testing, nevermind reporting the (lack of) speed.

Any risks with using those OpenDNS settings?

Ping 336ms; 2.72 down 0.43 up; 4mb line.

Joy.

I have zero access. Using mobile, this is getting beyond pathetic, one month it works, then down for two weeks, and constant hassle with Telkom saying nothing is wrong, and then magically it starts working after repeated complaints for two weeks.

same here, cape town.

Strange ping jumps and timeouts are causing unplayable lag in League of Legends with decent (~220) ping.

Came back online just in time to log into Internet banking and see my account being emptied. ****ing credit card fraudsters. I'm going to bed before this gets worse.

Well I'm getting way faster speedtest results to MTN and Mweb servers in both CT and JHB than non existent results on SAIX's own servers in CT and Rosebank. Something is definitely fooked. Would be great if someone from Telkom could let us in on what's going wrong this evening.

The internet is still broken on TI though.
