Telkom Internet Uncapped User Feedback.

Can you clarify the sentence above? What 'speeds and pings are pathetic'? Is this only online gaming (if it is not web browsing and streaming)? If so, which games? Which servers? Can you provide a traceroute to the server?

We throttle as follows:
1)If you are not a 'power user' according to the TI tracker, we throttle you to your account's speed. E.g. if you have a 4Mbps line and a 2Mbps account, you will get 2.00Mbps, whereas on a 2Mbps line, you will get 1.76Mbps.
2)If you are a power user, we throttle you to a lower speed
3)Users on 'soft-cap' accounts who have exceeded their quota are also throttled to a lower speed

On shaped accounts, P2P has the lowest priority but some guaranteed bandwidth (so it shouldn't ever die totally), while critical protocols (e.g. DNS) have highest priority. Gaming should have higher priority than P2P ...

So, I think you should test for DSLAM congestion between 6pm and 10pm.

If you log an ISP ticket (email [email protected] or log one online and PM me the ticket number you should get back by email), I will ensure someone provides you instructions for a simple DSLAM congestion test. If it shows it is not DSLAM congestion, we will need to investigate further.

Http download speeds in general - Dropbox, Attachments from Gmail, WeTransfer, YouSendit, just to name a few of the regular sites I download from on a daily basis. Pings from the speedtests are what I'm referring to. Between 6pm and 10pm, local ping was in the upper 700's and international in the upper 1000's. I don't game online. Max DL speed was around 25kbps. I saw it peak at maybe 52kbps a few times. This started yesterday - 12/08/2013. Tried again after 10pm, and everything was back to normal. Exactly the same today.

I'm not a Power User. I haven't seen anything but a "green" bar for my usage, and it never even reached the halfway mark at any time.

I will log a fault tomorrow, because I'm sure the same will happen. I'll PM you the ticket number.

Is there any truth to TI enforcing throttling during these times though ?
If not, I'm going to ask my mate to find out who the call centre agent he spoke to was, and who that agent
got his info from.

Dude everyone has confirmed that Telkom throttles high end users after a certain threshold.

This means your line speed gets slowed permanently till month end with no shaping on protocols.

What that threshold is no one knows so stop asking just read the previous posts to get ballpark figure.

All those MWEB guys coming to T1 are in for a good surprise around mid month and also the 30 day notice period for cancellation they agreed too.

BTW no shaping on Telkom. Only Newsserver slows down during busniess hours.

No offence but you sound like a C*NT right now!

Sure they got limits before you get throttled but it's nothing like mweb etc. Most people by now know that 1mbs users get throttled around 120GB, 2mbs user 240GB, 4GB users 450GB, 8mbs users 880GB.

Wtf is your problem? What is the point you're trying to get across?

The service actually works pretty well wether you are throttled or not.

I'll agree that the service works well, and generally I'm quite happy with TI, but those 4 hours that it doesn't work well are a problem for me, because that's when I really need to use it. Granted, I'm sure that's when everyone needs to use the net, but like I said, P2P should be given a back seat in favour of http dl's during that time, if this becomes the norm, and I hope it doesn't.

You sound like one of the few ones out which might mean you have a local dslam congestion issue as my service always runs harry flatters.

Thanks for the reply Ranger - I'm definitely going to take you up on your offer. I've said it before - I honestly cannot fathom how I could be a power-user (of course, not being allowed access to userstats complicates things) - but on TiTracker, the greenbar hasn't even started moving across the graph!

I hardly ever P2P, mostly just browse, update software, and occasionally(?) stream sites of ill-repute [:)] - again - don't think I hardly venture too far beyond 20/30 GBs per month - and that fluctuates downwards more often than not...

So, quite frankly, to be seeing <0.20-0.80mb download speeds on a 4mb line, with ping through the roof - is not what I signed up for.

Will try and get that ticket-number asap and drop you a pm, if you don't mind. Thanks again for the offer!!

If one does have a local dslam congestion issue - what are one's options? Pls excuse the ignorance - but in layman's terms, does that simply mean too many people in your geographical area are bottlenecking the DSLAM point? And if so - then not much can be done??

Sincere question btw.

Best you can do is to get Telkom to fix the issue so maybe contact TelkomZa or Ranger ;)

You can send a PM to TelkomZA and they will investigate dslam congestion for you.
Unfortunately if ur dslam is the cause there's nothing you can do but wait for Telkom to upgrade it.
I been down that road already. ..

Now I just schedule any big downloads I have for after 11pm and during the day, when my line runs at full tilt.

I just wish I'd get more than 2mb over wkends :(

This doesn't make sense.
Power users get throttles then why are so many of us non power users also getting throttled during these mentioned hours?
Streaming works fine but general browsing and any http downloads are just terrible.
I don't use p2p and only ever download after 11-12 and never during the day.

I thought this was good usage.
Now you're saying I should be downloading during the day?
Does not make any sense.

Nope. Something is wrong.
My exchange was upgraded within this year.
I do not accept the congested exchange as an option for the piss poor speeds and pathetic browsing I'm experiencing at times.
I will keep records from 16:00 - 22:00 and see if there is truth in the possibility that we are being throttled in the mentioned time frame.

I can't fix that if you don't give me details :-p

I posted it earlier, downloading at double the account speed, but can't stream 128kbs internet radio (when downloads are paused) - this makes me think you guys have some sort of shaping problem, or routing problem.

Performance on all general browsing/streaming is crap - but nntp is fine.

Kirkwood on 4Mbps uncapped.

Trace complete.

Pretty ****ty stats for 4 Mbps line and there is no sign of congestion on that line.
Local is more pathetic than International.

Think you'll find there's a problem with the MyBB speedtest as I get the same sort of results.

Speedtest.net and real time download testing indicate no problems with local or international.

@Ranger @ TelkomZa

How is it that we still have no word from you guys as to what has been happening the last week? I have done 55gb this month on a 4mb account so I am definitely not a power user. My exchange is not congested. My line syncs at full speed, yet speed test returns results that of 1mb consecutively day after day. You cannot tell me, with all of the people posting over the last few days, that it is congestion/throttling etc. The people posting are to widely spread geographically and speeds posted vary too much. All we want to know, is what is currently happening behind the scenes as something is clearly being tinkered with/trialed.
