Telkom Internet Uncapped User Feedback.

What speeds do you get if you use a download manager to download any old file (>5MB) of the net?

Time-out. But more or less the same +-10 kilobyte speeds until it eventually times out.

According to the Telkom site, I am being "managed". Last month, being managed meant speed being halved (+-45 kilobytes per second). Seems they are going the MWEB route afterall.

Now and then I would get full speeds (+-95 kilobytes per second) for a half hour or so, before it returns to +-10 kilobyte/second speeds.

combined usage is currently at +-166GB. Suppose I am taking the piss with that usage right?

If you're on 1mb uncapped I think we can safely assume you're being throttled.

Correct. On 1MB. But last month, throttling = +-45 kilobytes per second.

How is what Telkom is doing now, ANY different to what Mweb is doing?

More GBs for your buck before throttling.
Less daytime shaping.

On the first one I will concede. But the 2nd one is not true. I get constant 10 kilobyte per second speeds day and night.

From what I read in the MWeb threads torrents are severely shaped during business hours even before you get throttled - definitely not my experience with TI.

Telkom were upfront about it and told you it would/could happen.
Mweb advertised an unthrottled uncapped product and then changed the rules once they ran out of capacity.

Main gripe people are having with MWEB is their failure to disclose what constitutes abuse. Where did Telkom disclose what they consider abuse and where do they say EXACTLY how your speeds will be affected?

+1 and Ranger has explained that if you schedule your downloads during off peak times that you could get more done before throttling kicks in.

What he's implying is that if you schedule your downloads for after 11PM you could pull more than the 120GB before your 1MB gets before being throttled. At least thats what I understood from what he said.

Got a link where he said that?

I agree with you on that, i think that's what i also understood from that... And i for 1 used to get highly pissed off for not being able to download whatever whenever, but.... Yeah, i rather run my Dl's (NZB, dont use Torrents much anymore... No need for it..) at night, get better speeds then anyway.... in the morning, my SAB just shuts down...

still feel this is the best account to go for.

Give very good speeds during the day. We know IS can shape heavy during the day....
No abuse letters?
Very high usage before throttling kicks in I think.
The account is very cheap actually...

Been with this account since launch and its a decent account. There was some parts I wanted to say I'm gone but have since been fixed up. :)

Speed is pathetic tonight. Downloading from a Linux mirror at the following speed: 8,955 B/s

Traceroute indicates dslam congestion

I've tried 4 times today to dl edubuntu distro. The most I've managed to dl is 78MB of the 2.7GB it just stop dead in its tracks. Not getting higher than 140kB/s on a 4Mbps line.

Haven't seen 420kB/s for the last week. It averages at about 240kB/s during day. Not sure about evening or early hours.

Another thing I noticed is that every now and then my alernative dial up account pop up, seemingly indicating that my internet connection has dropped, but I have no other indication that the internet has been disrupted. Download does not stop.

All in all my download speed is definately down. On the usage tracker I'm still in the green, with about 160GB done.
