Things seem.. zippier today. Has something changed, or is it just a random occurrence?

Nope.

That said, depending on your area, downloading between 18:00 and 22:00 can be a pain.
Cape Town, but I think most of our IPC issues were resolved. (On the stroke of midnight, my download speed rocketed up to full line speed, so that's why I suspected HEAVY shaping).

What would normal HTTP download speed be during the evenings? With Telkom's shaping taken into account?

After a long stint with other ISP's I'm back on TI. Did not think it will ever happen but now here we are. Price and service wise i must say Telkom stepped up in a big way.

I must say, TelkomZA (Charl and Team!) Brilliant group of people hey! With all the assistance i got!! Telkom TI ROCKS!! I've been having some issues with my line for about a week or so, sent tracert's to TelkomZA and he done some investigation, then came to the conclusion that its Congestion on my exchange, this was picked up on Monday of this week, Tuesday i get a call saying that they moved me to a different DSLAM and i should test and VOILA! Al is right in the world of my INTERWEBS!

I can't really say for sure. I don't really download or browse that time of day, but have seen my http downloads comming down slower during those times. I would say at about 60kB/s on 4 Mbps line, but have seen much better as well.

Not sure how they apply their shaping. I downloaded last night and restricted the speed to 280KBps on my 4 meg and it ran at that set speed for close on 4 hours. Started downloading at around 9 in the evening and had no problems with speed. When taking the speed restriction off it hit 300/340 the whole time.

This past week line has been running like the clappers, week before that had some issues. Overall.... very happy with TI and will get them again when I move to new house in months time.

I've been tremendously impressed with TI since last night :P The NVidia driver stuck at 10kbps and the BF4 preload at 30kbps kinda annoyed me...

Tried downloading the driver again now:

And yes, it stayed between 5kbps and 15kbps the whole time. Sigh. What the hell. Speedtest shows 3.5mbps downstream (4mbps line).

Due to my QoS, my downloads are limited to about 370kB/s on certain parts of my network.
I'm also streaming radio atm and I still get about 330KB/s.
Tested torrents before that for few minutes and it ran well.

Just remember, just because you have a 4Meg line does not mean that all downloads will run at full speed. The connection on the other side also plays a role. For all you know they might also just have a 4 or 10Meg line and 100's of people downloading from there. So could easily be a bottleneck on that side.

Makes me wonder why mine is so crap :( I tested the same download with an Afrihost and an MWeb account, and it came down at full line speed on both. But yet, it's 10kbps average on Telkom.
Any ideas?

Other than I'm using a 3rd party download manager, no.
Ek is nie slim genoeg nie, but there are a lot of wise guys here that might help and if you are lucky enough, Ranger might answer you some time.

Edit:
Are the Afrihost and MWeb account capped accounts?

No, both are also uncapped.

Ok this is very interesting. Disconnected the Telkom account completely, waited 10 mins, reconnected (in order to refresh the session and get a new IP), and the download came down at full line speed! For all of 10 seconds. Then back to 10kbps.
Very obvious shaping. Just can't figure out why.

So, the upgrade to the traffic management platform that was completed last week Tuesday morming in our Cape Town site will be repeated for our Gauteng site (that also serves KZN) on Saturday morning if everything goes according to plan.

Our other network upgrades in the Gauteng site were completed successfully. Some failover tests done during that upgrade did not have the deaired results though. We are investigating, and may re-test failover in just over a week, if a cause and resolution are found by then.

My P2P speeds at 01:16 AM on a Saturday Morning...

TI uncapped not really P2P friendly for me.
(2 MB DSL Line, 2MB Uncapped Account)

We were doing network maintenance in our Gauteng site during this time, and I believe at about that time had half our IPC capacity in our Gauteng site down.

We repeated the exercise on Sunday morning.

Also, at times some traffic was re-routed to our Cape Town site.

Has it been better since Sunday morning 06h00?
