@ranger @telkomza I would just like to know if u guys are shaping harsher than normal due to new policy changes or in preparation of network changes etc. I just noticed the past week my NNTP runs exactly half my line speed constantly. Just want to know if it something on my side or yours. Thanks

Ok so finally got speedtest.net to load (hammer F5 a few times):

Very good results, yet the internet experience is not ayoba - sites aren't loading first time, and playstation network is dog slow with downloads failing (not that psn is ever fast, its a dog in its own right). :/

I've been struggling with pretty much the same issue since at least 25/10.
Even got into an argument with someone about TI who couldn't understand that even though speedtest says everything is fine, if a customer is only getting 12kb/s on HTTP downloads and can't load sites or stream Youtube, there's a problem.
Multiple reference numbers, hours spent on hold and being pushed between their ADSL and Internet departments, multiple PM's to TelkomZa and still no results.

They'll apply a quick fix that lasts a couple of hours then it's down the toilet again.

I don't mean to sound happy that you're having hassles, I'm just glad it's not me alone. Telkom's really dropped the ball on this but it's not like we can go anywhere else...

The latest myth spun for me is that my 4mb line is syncing at 900kb/s.
No feedback on whether they ever intend doing anything about it.

I'm doing a 600MB http download from sourceforge at the moment and I'm only getting between 30-50KB/s on a 1Mb/s line... really pathetic. I have little hope for my torrents which I'm gonna start at 12am

To be fair SF tends to just be slow as hell every once in a while regardless of how good your line or who your ISP is.

Fluctuating between 50-207kbps on my 2MB Uncapped. Been erratic since Friday, but at no time have I seen my full line speed for more than a minute or so on downloads. Could be worse I suppose. Can't comment on torrents because I don't use them, but http dl's have been a bit wonky. YouTube and browsing is all good.

My torrent speeds are dismal.

I have my upload speed fixed at 16kB/s and download at 128kB/s on a 1Mb/s line.

Between 12am and 8am this morning I got 1.125GB uploaded and 2.277GB downloaded...

I'm also on a 1Mb/s line and I've had a similar problem last night too, started my torrents at 11pm last night and my speed was fluctuating between 9kB - 35kB. I thought after 12am it will start to run at full line speed, but when I saw my stats for last night, the highest speed it ran at was around 70kB and it kept fluctuating, never had a stable speed at all.

I'm guessing these issues are due to telkoms upgrades etc. Let's just wait till tommorrow morning and see how our downloads perform.

I haven't seen a decrease in the slightest.
24/7 100% line speed on nntp.
What news provider are you using?

Just for comparison's sake, Sickbeard and SABNZBD together fetched 4 shows for me in the small hours, full line speed (400 kBps) using news.saix.net. Southern cape, using telkom SAIX CT DNS Servers (196.43.46.190 and 196.43.34.190) TI 4 MBps uncapped. Started at about 11 pm, were all finished by 1:30 am.

I know what you mean, im getting the same issue, but for me its happening on my NNTP downloads, and if im not mistaken you in KZN right? Im in JHB, so it cant be an exchange issue then...?

And before, it used to be at a stable 207Kbps on my NNTP Downloads, but now, it will be like, 50Kbps - 100Kbps - 180Kbps - 207Kbps - back down to 50Kbps etc.....

Try getting a trial News server with Tweaknews https://www.tweaknews.eu/?page=order&product=1 this could rule out the possibility that it could be your News server that's a bit IFFY..

news.saix.net

Anyway, since several people here are experiencing the same thing, it sort of answers my question. Just waiting on @ranger to give us a little more detail.

Which news provider?
If on free local news then I can only assume it is the news account being shaped.

For the 1st time in many months - having issues down in Paarl...

First speedtest - Afrihost (Free/Test account), and all is as it normally is:

Second speedtest - my usual TI account (4mb uncapped):

Bit of a pinball-fest here... Speeds jumping all over the place... Streaming video taken a big hit... Anyone else?

Yeah, not sure what the problem is, or where it lies. Speedtest is normal, but realtime downloads are poked. A port reset works for all of an hour, and then it's wonky again, but YouTube is fine, and browsing is fairly snappy.

Torrent and NNTP speeds have been really bad as of late, but more so Torrents.
Its 00:28 and look at how slow it is, hasn't hit higher than 30kB/s.
slow slow torrents.JPG

HTTP downloads and streaming has been superb, NNTP at around 50% and torrents almost dead.
Its been this way for the last 2 weeks at least.
