Well my line just fell over for an hour or so.
0.5 on the download on a 4mb line.

Seems to have come right after multiple modem resets.

well mine seems to just be my account and not my line so hopefully it will get sorted soon :(

Everything seems ok now.
Not sure where this instability is coming from today.
Haven't had any problems otherwise.

My 2nd day on TI (2mb).

Been running torrents during office hours for the sake of experimenting. Currently getting good speeds of between 160kbs and 200kbs, but speed is very erratic and most of the day was below 10kbs.

Average of past 4 hours was 67kbs which is quite bad. Will see what happens tonight after office hours.

This has been my experience too. Torrents can be very erratic, somedays they run at line speed, somedays the speeds are up and down and then there's somedays I cant get higher than 20kB/s.

I'm finding NZB's run between 80-100% so I'm using them more now instead of torrents.
Get a Tweaknews trial account and test it out. I'll be signing up with them next week.

Would also like to know.

Do they shape youtube during the day?

Youtube and streaming is great on Ti. I can stream 720p on a 4MB line with 2MB uncapped account.

Am I the only one getting high gaming pings the last few days? Been sitting at 200 ping plus most of the time in CSGO pretty frustrating...

It is news.saix.net port 119 and 2 connections, User and Password you leave blank.

You can always put news2.saix.net with the same details as above.... If those 2 dont work on your TI Setup, try a trial account with Tweaknews to see if it isnt maybe your connection thats faulty, or that saix is off line.

tried the saix addresses but they do not work. Get a connection timeout error, even though timeout is set at 30 secs.

$ dig +noall +answer news.telkomsa.net
news.telkomsa.net. 3570 IN CNAME news.saix.net.
news.saix.net. 870 IN A 196.43.2.61

news.saix.net only allows one TCP connection per client IP.

decoder failure :)

tried the telkom address which works, so that would do for now... thanks

For those interested in the performance of torrents on Ti 2mb uncapped, I've measured my speed for 24 continuous hours while downloading 3 well-seeded torrents.

As mentioned previously, the speeds are erratic during business hours and torrents are just about dead (<10kbs) most of the time. Sometimes is picks up to 60% of theoretical line speed during office hours, but mostly not.

After hours I saw speed increases which brought the overall average over 24 hours to 50% of theoretical line speed.

So, as mentioned earlier, if you can get all your content between 12 - 6AM then you should schedule your downloads like that. If your downloads don't get completed in that schedule, start downloading earlier at night. But don't try to torrent during office hours.

I prefer using NNTP for most of my downloads, but for some content it just really isn't an option. I'm pretty sure NNTP might perform better in a 24 hour period than torrents, and I will test this later on.

So far I'm happy with moving to Ti. It sure beats my previous ISP, and its cheaper!

You'll see my Speedtests aren't great. Any advice on that will be appreciated??

Pakka - no need to test nntp, I can confirm they run full speed 24/7 on my line.
That's what I've been saying in here for a while.
Telkom seems to not like Torrent traffic at all.

Not my experience, I'm happy with the way TI's QoS treats torrents :)

Torrents.jpg

Mind you I limit my torrent speeds so as not to impact overall network performance and I don't bother monitoring speed minute by minute.

Well admittedly they perform fine in the wee hours of the morning.
I wouldn't know really as I haven't torrented in some time.
Actually I lie, I downloaded the Big Bang Theory Box set for a friend 2 weeks back and it flew after 12.

I'm new to Telkom, so wanna find out if it is normal to get a 550ms+ latency in WoW using a Uncapped 10MB account.... For the life of me I cannot accept that .... please tell me there is an issue somewhere .... (I joined 2nd December)

This company is so useless - a week now of trying to upgrade to 10MB uncapped, twitter is also useless, you get nowhere, how difficult can it possibly be?

For those intrested and having the same streaming problems I have for the past 3-4 weeks, I got the following response from TelkomZa today :

Hi

Plse confirm if you have had your line tested.
Is the problem only on netflex.
If it is only netflex, the isp has to be notified and investigated by the isp.

^GH

I was under the impression that contacting Telkomza that I am notifying the ISP. Or am I mistaken? Does Telkomza represent the infrastructure side of Telkom and not the ISP Telkomsa?

Im definetly not experiencing congestion :

Took me more than 4 hours to download a 1.6GB game from PSN this afternoon, using a 4 Mbps line.
Pathetic.

Yes, Telkom shaping is making games close to unplayable at the moment. I've given up on Planetside2 and SWTOR is not much better at over 600ms! Pings / Tracert all look fine, speedtest is normal. *sigh*
