Telkom introduces new flat-rated calling plans

no contracts, no activation fees, activation is immediate.

They probably want to get a feel for how much a similar product will cost them, I guess we will see a better product in the future, but you will have to sign a contract. I WILL NOT SIGN!!!!!!
 
I can think of how the advertisement, for Telkom CLOSER, can go:
In the background play NIN - Closer, then voice say "Telkom: because we ..."
and song plays part "want to f*** you like an animal ..."

That can work, right? :)

I did some calculations using the Telkom tariff calculator and the 1000 free standard minutes translate to about R180 per month. If you call for an hour every day in call more time 30 times a month, that translates to about R284 per month. I see that the line rental is included in the price. So that totals to about R544. Not a bad saving if you already paying over R700 a month on local calls. A step in the right direction? Any viewpoints? Anybody else done some calculations?
Looks like Telkom is moving to a "set rate make as many calls as you like" business model as they have in some countries overseas. Just spoke to Telkom and enquired about CLOSER the new service they are offering and they said it is NOT available to ADSL customers...Not good enough Telkom !!

I have adsl & have signed for the R300 package. Taking into account that the R300 INCLUDES the line rental of R87 (or something like that), it's a good deal if you make more than R250 worth of calls per month. With ADSL I don't need Internet dialup.

Pity the 1000 doesn't include some cell time, but maybe that will come in the future.
 
Just pulled out my telephone account.

Weirdly, after doing some calculatiosn, the closer deal does not seems unfair. It is actually quite good.

now where is the catch ?

I currently use +- 336 internet hours a month on ISDN. This costs me R56 for infinate call and then 12"dialups" x R8.64 = R159.68. Now telkom want me to use 150 hours for R150... haha ha haha BBWWWAAHAHAHahahahahah

Im not interested in cheaper local calls, i only call cell phones and their is no benifits on this cLOSER option.

Way ta go telkom.

Conclusion. If you do use the phone alot, do not go for option 1. No matter how I looked at it, option 1 is frequently more (for a person having InfiniteCall and spends time on the net)

Option 2 is quite good, but, for a person that does make quite a bit of calls, option 3 is amazing. Most people will benefit using option 3. even for me, if I cancel my ISDN (that I only use for the extra number via MSN), get the R300 option and an additional line, will save up to between R150 and R450 per month ... That is a significant saving.

Thanks Booswig, i cant find that info, so i assume that you still need the R150 internet on top of the options.

If i understand this correctly then:

My current situation is as folllows
Line rental + Infinate Call + Tax = R282.55
My online usage last month 12 dialups At R8.64 for 336 hours = R103.68
Total data costs to me was +- R386.23

cLOSER 3 R429.60 and internet R150 = R579.60 for (150 hours + 1000min)166.6 hours -woops whats this 666 :eek:

This is only my data costs, excluding my current calls.

No thanks telkom. Just another reason why i wont be doing business with you in a few months.

I'm the face of new Telkom customers. How so? My phone broke a week or two back, and I can't make any calls. And I havent reported it as a fault, and I won't. I'm leaving it screwed up, so that I'm not tempted to make any calls at all via the landline. So all I pay is just phone rental & 'adsl rental'. (And if there was a way to tell Telkom to **** off and die with their equipment and their bullsh*t ADSL rental, I'd do that too.)

which sounds like what you're saying, but that quote by debbie2 would then have been a highly inaccurate statement for mweb to have published like that...
 
Flat Rate....... Huh

Telkom wouldn't know what a flat rate was even if it moved in next door and came over and borrowed sugar

Clearly it is as we say in business, some sort of mis-understanding, perhaps they were confused with Flat Earth or Flat Broke

These are basic prices for standard services.

Prices for these services are even cheaper in Europe.
So what is Telkom offering thats different.....uuummmmm.......nothing.
Except that they are still ripping off the SA public.
In my opinion prices in Rand (in brackets) is what Telkom should be charging.
Accept nothing else.
