Telkom introduces new flat-rated calling plans

It all depends!

If you have a 128k ISDN line and you go with Infinite call:
It works out to R841 - R873 a month (say you connect 23 - 25 days of the month). 2a line rental and telkom Internet 128K included.

If you go with CLOSER plan 1 and Internet Add-On:
R688p/m (All included and 150 internet hours a month)
Only downer is that you'll be able to stay online 3-5 hours a day. Depending if you're using 64K or 128K.

So I say, It all depends on what you want. CLOSER plan is going to work out better for me.

Hope my calculations were correct.

Line rentals on analog lines are going up by R7.44 but on ISDN they are dropping (by R44.10 on ISDN2a). Any ideas if the CLOSER rentals will change?

Telkom Closer Option 3 is a good service.

We currently have it on our line. R300 for UNLIMITED off peak calls, (redialing once per hour isnt bad, I use to make 60+ minute call on my cellphone and Vodacom cuts you at 59 minutes everytime aswell..

Mayve Vodacom is using Telkom closer ???

Anyways, the 1000 minutes during the day is also awesome. I am personally use to my Weekenders allowance of calls, and Telkom Closer does give a customer a better experience of the telecom system.

ADSL 384 is now R245 per month and an ISP R199 for 3GB.

Total Service cost - Unlimited Off-Peak, 1000 Daytime, 3GB 384kb service.
R698 or $100

Now keeping in mind its Telkom we are dealing with, it could actually be worse for the same service. 1000 minutes by itself is expensive without Closer.

I am not defending Telkom, I think they are good enough at that themselves, but I am saying they have made a adjustment to make it cheaper, they didnt have to. They are still a monopoly in Fixed line communications and until then, they can really do what they want.

Fight for what you believe, and thank them for what they do by themselves without force from the regulator or goverment.

I disagree. This closer deal has everything to do with new competition from the sno, sentech, voip and cell companies. They are trying to hold on to the only thing they will still control for some time, and that is fixed line phone calls.
You will only benefit through the closer deals if you mainly use it to make fixed line phone calls. Cell phone calls and internet is unaffected by these options. It is still just as expensive. Except if you take the R150 internet deal. But then you are stuck with dialup. So much for progress. For R160 you can get 250MB at vodacom.

edit: Forgot to add, you can't use the InfiniteCall with Closer and calls to an ISP is charged seperately. So your only option for internet is the R150 deal or a ADSL deal.

I still think they made a slip up with the package in a sense wrt long distance in SA but in a way what they are trying to do is get people into the habbit of using the pots alot more, get their money fixed per month almost like prepaid, and with 1000 minutes maybe with all the chatting at night you wil forget about cost and over-run it during the day. This kinda boosts their income for some cases where people have cell contracts and thus use their cell phone more than landline due to free minutes.

I don't think the price of it will change except for perhaps isdn where the package is more expensive on isdn.

Yes, I understand what you mean. They will need to make an adjustment when competition does come, but until that happens they should just worry about customer loyalty which is already trashed. The Closer package is only designed for Voice calls, and not cellphones, that would be Telkom Supreme Call. Competition with least cost routing.

Telkom thinks, Closer can be for home users or businesses with only landlines call need.
Telkom Supreme Call businesses with cellular and international calls need.
TelkomADSL for internet, that is the combination they are looking for.

They are trying to get away from dialup with these packages, however if the user cannot afford DSL or does not want DSL then they can apply for a internet addon which is designed for low usuage.

AFAIK the additional cost of the closer options on ISDN is exactly the same as the cost on standard analogue. The only difference being the cost of an ISDN line versus a standard line rental.

In terms of the proposed new pricing this has improved as ISDN rental is decreasing while standard line rental is increasing.

OT

You know, I have been trying to work out the words to that song that Telkom have used for the Closer Ad.... I am almost sure it starts " I just know you're lying "
