This is wonderful news. What goes around, comes around and Telkom is starting to reap what it has sown. Trying to expand into Africa will be a total disaster. Other governments just need to do a search on myadsl.co.za, hellkom, Google and other sources and decide if it will be in their best interests to allow Telkom to operate in their countries. Most will go against this decision while a few may see a cash cow at the expense of their own people. Add to that a lack of competition, unfair and illegal business practices, multiple lawsuits against legitimate competition and a network which is way behind international benchmarks and your cash cow will start producing.
As for Ivy going - good riddance to bad rubbish. The one single person who has single handedly messed up the entire South African telecoms industry is finally on her way out. Experts in telecommunications have long given professional advice and opinions on what must happen for the country to advance, but she has done things her own way - which in effect is no way. If Ivy was a car mechanic and worked on you vehicle, beware - by the end of the day when you got your car back, you would have five reverse gears and one forward gear.

You know I joined this community when it first started up. RPM setup a forum for us to lash out at "Sentech" at the time for screwing us around with that crappy service of theirs. Since then I have been involved in trying to get Telkom to lower its prices and increase its service offerings in some form or another. I remember going to meetings. Being a part of that group that bought Telkom shares on behalf of us to then represent us during shareholder meetings. I remember RPM having 1 on 1 sessions with Papi Molotsane wrt to better performance. ADSL regulations came and went and things are still the same. I always thought that I would be happy to see the day Telkom gets a good kick up its bum, but to be honest I am not. I am actually quite sad that as a group of Technology & Telecommunications activists/hobbyists, we have had 0 impact or influence over any of our leaders who could have played a transforming role in Telkom.
I hate Telkom with the greatest of passion. But I recall countless of posts, conversations, articles and analysts from all walks of life saying that Telkom faces the risk of being complacent and old school. I personally believe that as a community we have done as much as we could to try and educate and inform the masses including the countries leadership on the risks and potential losses we will face if Telkom is allowed to continue in its current fashion. It is so sad that it has come to this point. If Telkom had good leaders 5 years ago where would we be today? Poin is that the writing was on the wall and no one bothered to pay attention to it. Whether it be because of greed, politics or sheer incompetence we still will sit with the same problem at the end of the day.
So Hooray! Telkom is burning to the ground. But so is the rest of the country and its potential to be worth anything of value. What most people fail to understand is that just like Eskom is vital to economic growth because they supply the core ingredient to business which is ELECTRICITY! So is Telkom or should I say was Telkom. Broadband or fast reliable cheap internet is the life blood of any Digital Economy. Look at the effects of load shedding on our economy? Slow growth, interest rate hikes, growing unrest, etc..
The question is? What economical and social benefits have we lost and are continue loosing due to the snail paced Telecommunications Reform that has been going on for the last 5-6 years now? Has Government put more focus on the short term financial gains of those involved in the countries BEE Strategy by Listing Telkom and brokering the Elephant Consortium into the mix? Was it always governments plan to play Telkom into this position so that alot of people and companies will profit from this strategy?
Either way whoever is behind this short term strategy of more financial gain over long term telecommunications growth and development has put SA behind atleast another 3 - 5 years. Bad planning, bad strategy, weak and in some cases incompetent leaders and lets not forget greedy investors.
This country had a golden opportunity and the potential to re-invent & maybe revolutionise itself in the Telecoms Industry and set the pace for the rest of Africa. We have not only squandered this opportunity but we have let lesser African Countries overtake us in this regard which is appaling. We have also delayed our progress going forward, and I truly believe that the current Broadband players who will take us into the future have become to comfortable with the status qou! Meaning if it aint broke dont fix it. Especially when companies like MTN are growing in leaps and bounds and are attracting a lot of foreign investment.
Alot of people in this forum will agree with me when I say "We told you so Telkom! You should have just listened to us!". Unfortunately even if they did decide to change their strategy and begin to listen to us its too late. Leaders and citizens alike have new battles to fight that need more priority. Crime, xenophobia, sharp rise in cost of living, load shedding and overall economic depression.

Is SA going back to the dark ages then? With daily commodities prices rising to the point where its becoming unaffordable for the "middle-class man", our "Rogue" leaders not doing anything to alleviate the situation, war erupting in townships, Ivy stepping down, CPT weather in JHB, oil industry and now Telkom on the brink of collapse.

Telkom will never die, they have all the infrastructure in place, huge investors, government support.
Telkom is still the best value for money/reliability in the market and will continue to be so.
The moment they smelt competition their prices decreased and I'm almost 100% sure they will always be equal or lower than the competition.

The one thing I resent most of what goes on in Gov today, is the lack / inability of forward planning for the benifit of the country. Problems are created by Gov and we, the people of SA, are left to carry the can. This apparent total disregard for our needs and well being is appauling. The weak spin they consistantly put on their blunders are pathetic, or if that fails, blame it on appartheid or the inqualities of the past...
I guess it takes a lot of guts and backbone to admit to a country and the world that you have screwed up royaly, and you are the direct cause for their missery. To me it looks like Telkom is trying to "escape the burden of pursecution" by attmpting to sell out before the walls come crumbling down.
