Telkom just gave me a prezzi!

can any one tell me what a UMC looks like cos I have a telkom box outside my house thats 8 meters from my door (yes I measured it) and if that box is a UMC ...............................:D:D:D

I'm also in pmb and I'm still plodding along at 384kb/s. WHY does this stuff never happen to me?

Well, I had my lil 10 meg cable in the UK...and to put it simple...it was amazing. Watch youtube videos streaming...download whatever while playing games (just limit the download speeds enough so you can get some bandwith out for your games)...etc etc etc. We look at what the rest of the world (even including some other african countries) have in the ranks of ADSL...and what do we find...they offer a whole lot more for a whole lot less. And this is why I moan...because I have friends in the ISP game and I know how much it actually costs to do uncapped. And they could have give then entire country uncapped...due to the fact the people who download 1000 meg a month will be far more outweighed by the people downloading less than a gig. So they would still look at pretty much the same profits with less customer aggravation. But, I digress, this is about line speeds. Telkom and Neotel should comit themselves to creating the best broadband packages that they can...which neither have done so (or if they are busy with expanding to bring us better deals they are keeping very very quiet about it...they must be hunting wabits :P).
 
Surely Telkom will make more money from a 8mbps line than from a 4mbps line as a faster line will generally translate to more data transfer per month, and that is where they make the money.

Congrats mate, looks like you have also been bumped up to a 4meg line. But maybe your line cant handle 4meg and thus has had to be "toned" down to 2meg.

BTW guys: My line is still working wonders! Although it keeps jumping from 2 to 3 to 4meg sync all the time?

I also got a present. Something wrong at the exchange. Speed down Nil Up who knows. Last time it all worked wed 7/10. Stop all these posts about great speeds etc. What about those of us that can't even get it to work
 
Hi guys,

So I'm in Cairo at the moment and decided to investigate Egypt's home ADSL offerings, as a way of comparing to home.

Since I have 4mbps ADSL at home, I decided to compare the equivalent only. Briefly, this is what I found:

(Telephone line rental costs not included.)

UNCAPPED 4mbps ADSL - 350 LE (Egyptian pounds) per month = R455 p/m

And that's the most expensive offering they have... 4mbps uncapped.... for R455 p/m. What the fekk!?

On the cheaper (slower and capped) options, it costs 10LE (R13) per GB (international) to "top up" your account. Their international bandwidth costs the same as our "local only" bandwidth from SAIX! :eek:

Some other costs:
- Wireless router purchase - 199LE (R258)
- Once-off installation cost - 75LE (R97)

Their speeds are on par with SA, but prices are way, way down.
How is it that Egypt, which really is a pretty crappy third world dump, has such cheaper ADSL than South Africa?

Oh... month-to-month contract...
 
have u thought maybe its because of their proximity to europe that results in lower bandwith prices? they can tap into a **** load of cables..
 
But such a huge price gap? But if you just compare "installation" fee, then you know we are being taken for a ride... because "proximity to Europe" doesn't affect that!

Very friendly guy there was grinning ear to ear when I asked about the ad on TV for the "New-Network"

Said he could not tell me more :D

I am prepared to put money down that Daemon Hellkom has something up their sleeves.:cool:

Which we WILL see before the end of THIS year.

Ja, it was supposed to be live already, but I think now that it has been pushed back a little bit. The trial is slowly going live, but my guess is now within the first three months of next year.
 
Hopefully they drop 4mbit prices to 512 prices, or up us to 8mbit... either way i am happy :)
