Isn't the theoretical limit of ADSL1 8Mbps?

If so, I highly doubt everyone is gonna get bumped up to a max of 8Mbps. If they replace the dinosaur copper with some decent fibre then yeah, 8Mbps seems plausible but for now it just seems that everyone is talking out their backsides.

I'm pretty excited! Surely with faster speeds we have to get bigger caps? I hope so but this won't be the first (or last) time Telkom let me down:(:(

ummm.. not sure where you've been the last 2 years.

have you seen all the fibre being pulled? Also, most of the dslams are already ADSL2+ compliant.... hell, even on my home 384k, its sync'd using ADSL2+

So it seems its you thats misinformed, rather than everyone talking out their backsides :)

They might have been pulling fibre, but the last mile is still crappy old copper. Why do you think there are so many problems with people sync'ing above 1mbps.

100% correct! This is my permanent rant. :mad:

The copper network needs urgent attention. Pity Telkom retrenched all the relevant cable maintenance staff over the last 4 years and have a RTF (run to fail) approach to the last mile network. This means no routine maintenance and only fix it (maybe) when it breaks or is stolen.

So you want them to pull fibre to your curb? Even in the Uk, the local loop is "crappy old copper". there is nothing wrong with copper, as long as it isnt more than 5.5km between you and the dslam...

it seems that people having problems sync'ing over 1mbps is in the VAST minority...

I still say telkom should do the "if your area/exchange can support it then bump up speeds"
 
Iv been told the exchange in Benmore/Sandton is quite capable of supporting higher speeds and mantain a decent fault tolerance. Telkom should of been hooking us up with ADSL2+ atleast 2yrs ago

Plenty of their exchange areas could have been hooked up already.

It's probably the 1 for all and all for 1 approach again. If 1 user cannot get a guaranteed minimum of 1024 then it cannot be offered to all.

They will be flooded with complaints and their call centres won't be able to handle the additional load (as it is they are struggling!).

EDIT: And they will have to spend plenty on their maintenance budget to fix the copper network (LLU) and this will cause the top boys to lose their bonusses.
 
Problem is with the end-users here in S.A are craving for things to be done NOW especially with all this talk of 8mbit and lower speeds getting bumped up. One part of me is saying "jeez people calm down, always want want want" but then again i cant blame them since we are miles behind the rest of world. If i started off on a 12mbit connection then got bumped up to 24mbit i would be quite stoked about it but 12mbit is more than decent by anymeans. When a 384k user is told he might get bumped to 1mbit or even 4mbit for free i would also be annoyed/disappointed by lack of progess or upgrade.
