384k -> 1Mb
512k -> 4Mb
4Mb -> 4Mb - no surprises
 
The lady i spoke to on the phone seemed very excited about something. For some reason I trust her.

haha...anyway on a more serious note..I'm still syncing at 384 and it sucks :( I hope they bump me up to 1Mbps...real broadband :cool:
 
Maybe im just a noob, but I think there is more hidden capacity for speed than they let on.

When downloading headers, have a look at the download speed achieved. This was constant. I downloaded like 10GB of headers in less than a hour.

Am I missing something, could I be reading it wrong, because it was like a 34mb connection. Could it have anything to do with the "50 Simultaneous connections"? Not really sure how that works.

Shame. I hate to disappoint you guys, but I had a chat with my Telkom ADSL insider on Thursday. These 8Mbps stories are all rumours. The infrastructure can barely handle the 4Mbps load, so 8Mbps is a pipe dream.

The infrastructure being the entire Telkom network? Or more the copper layed across the country?

Like say for example I live in a newish suburb - posts mentioning the line going out the house to the pole made me think of this - as obviously those suburbs are older.

Surely newer suburbs, with later exchanges might support it and older ones not?

I am just typing out loud, I am very noob lol so forgive my ignorance.
 
<rant>I'm happy with my 384 line. My cap is so tiny I can't afford to download so I'm happy plodding along and occasionally waiting for a download. Basically, speed isn't a concern for me. What I want is a huge cap! Afrihost has made some inroads into the market but I'm paying so much overhead for my line I can't take good advantage of it (and uncapped is out of the question!). Does anyone know why I have to pay for a phone line and an adsl line? It's the exact same bloody line, it's not like I'm paying for a fibre cable to come into my house! I'd rather get a 384 line for free than pay for a 512 line</rant>

Got a nice surprise from Telkom as well. Went to their shop today to cancel my Do3 when the salesman told me they upped the cap to 5GB now. Still paying R149/month for it. So we did the maths and as it turned out it's 29,80/gig. Kinda kewl isn't it? So, eventhough not a huge fan of SAIX, I'm thinking about keeping it up.

Telkom has strategic objectives that are followed as part of network planning to ensure that we drive the implementation of the NGN. Telkom's NGN is based on an evolutionary approach where the NGN is deployed in parallel with the legacy network and migration to the NGN is phased in over time.

Key to Telkom's NGN deployment are Softswitches that function in association with Application Servers, next generation transport networks, and IP and Metro Ethernet networks. In order to leverage on Telkom's ubiquitous network deployment, the transport network will be transformed to support the expected exponential growth in bandwidth. The IP Network has been positioned to differentiate Telkom from its competitors and to leverage on the bandwidth capacity increase of the transport network.

To achieve success with the NGN, two objectives are actively pursued; the consolidation of service offerings and the development and marketing of new and innovative services which are enabled by the NGN technology.

Hmmm I think they'll have to lay new cable from the exchange right up to my modem if they want to give me anything new. It looks like those that can will be bumped up - while those that can't will have to suck it for a while longer...typical. Anyway, if it is ADSL2+ with IPTV then how likely is it that I'll be able to get anywhere even close to 24Mbps ever in my lifetime (unless I get another 5 lines installed or just move to [-]another country[/-] an area with new cables)?

NGN DSL technology
IPTV will run over ADSL2+ or as Telkom refers to it next generation DSL technology, which is in the process of being rolled out by Telkom.
This means that initially IPTV is limited to viewers who live near an upgraded exchange. Next generation DSL extends the capability of basic ADSL by doubling the number of downstream bits. The data rates can be as
high as 24 Mbps/s downstream and 1 Mbps upstream depending on the distance from the exchange to the customer’s home. Next generation DSL is capable of doubling the frequency band of typical ADSL connections from 1,1 MHz to 2,2 MHz and allows port bonding. This is where multiple ports are physically provisioned to the end user and the total bandwidth is equal to the sum of all provisioned ports. So if two lines capable of 24 Mbps were bonded, the end result would be a connection capable of 48 Mbps. True broadband! Although IPTV is delivered via the internet, it is implemented on a private network so no capping is applicable.

Now let's say they are able to give me an 8 meg line - is that sufficient for IPTV? What about my normal [-]leeching[/-] internet browsing while something is using said IPTV on my same line? Will I still be able to watch my [-]p0rn[/-] youtube videos at the same time without streaming hassles (as I have occasionally at the moment on this wonderful 4meg line)?
 
I think IPTV is scrapped off telkoms books, after they sold off telkom media.
 
I just upgraded to 4mb as well.. :(.. and it was running at 4mb for about 2 days.. now it fluctuates between 2mb and 3mb... *mutter*

From a content provider perspective I agree with you. They should never have gone into that line of business anyway.

They should focus on providing the infrastructure required for IPTV !!
 
It's their new faster broadband. Had a line fault today where they had to resync my port, and I asked the guy on the phone what the ads on the radio were about. He said "it's the new faster broadband for the 2010 world cup, you will need to wait to find out more about that, probably before the end of the year"
 
I'm not trying to jump on the bandwagon here, but when I logged into my router (Siemens Gigaset sx762) I saw the following:

ADSL Line

Status: Cable connected
Line mode: G.DMT
Maximum line rate: 8128 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 23.6 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 23.6 dB (upstream)
Output power: 9 dBm (upstream)

Now my downstream rate isn't 8128, its the 4096 it should be. However, that does suggest that the line should support 8Mbps, does it not? Or did we already know that and I just didn't get the memo?
 
Well the price for 512k is really not that far off a 4 meg line price.

I think it is like a 100 bucks difference. The price difference between 384 and 512 is actually stupid.

the headers are just text/ascii and thats why it came down so fast, nothing to do with telkoms network or capabilities

Does that mean EVERYONE will be on 4mb lines, and they will have 1 product?
