Telkom LIT Android media box - Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

Which box would be the better buy as i see from the posts they are both 1099

Mibox doesnt have Ethernet and is android 6.0, but has a quad 2.0ghz processor vs

the LIT box which is a quad 1.5ghz processor and android 7.1.1 and an ethernet port?

I'd take the LIT box, but if you absolutely need NetFlix the Mi box might be a better option - up to you.

I have two question.

1. Please can anyone share the APK link for the latest Netflix that is working.

2. Can the LIT box be Rooted?

In my opinion there is no "best"... only best for you and your needs

I suggest you get a good idea of what your requirements are, then take the time to look at the capabilities of each device and then decide for yourself.

Raw specs alone dont necessarily make a box better than another

The lit box works for me cos:
1. I got it free with my telkom contract
2. DSTV streaming (especially sports)
3. I DONT need netflix (which it doesnt support in HD, I think the MiBox does)
4. It was free
5. its a nice free upgrade for minix neo u1 , which there is nothing wrong with, except that DSTVNow doesnt work on it.

PS: anyone interested in a Minix Neo U1 in CPT. PM me

For anyone interested in this Minix media player, and if you're going to advertise it Volksieboi make sure to mention, it's extremely easy to install LibreELEC on an SD card or flash drive and you will basically have the ultimate media player.

With my LIT box I mount a SAMBA share on my RPi ... , over the network.

I've got no experience rooting and flashing it. Will look into it.

Thanks

The Hdmi port on my A011 lit box failed. They refused to exchange the unit in store. Went to 2 different stores. Employees sound like trained robots. “Sorry sir, it’s Telkom policy”. They sent the unit to head office to first see if Someone can “fix” the unit.
Only then if that fails they will send a replacement unit to the store for pick up. Apparently this process takes between 21 and 28 days.
Can you please give feedback about your experience after you go into a store?

Will report back later this evening or tomorrow AM. I'm going to the Tygervalley direct store.

It's super easy, all you do is write a ~150MB image file to a flash drive, copy over another 40KB file, plug in the flash drive in the Minix, plug in the power cable and hold the power button for 6 seconds.

You now have a dual boot system where you can use Android or the Linux based LibreELEC, with LibreELEC you should have perfect refresh rate switching which not even the Shield does perfectly and it even does Dolby Atmos under LibreELEC.

For people that just want to playback local files not stream Netflix and DSTV etc you won't really find much better.

Ok so went to the telkom direct store... told them that the Lit box is faulty. They booked it into their technical centre for assessment.

That being said, I looked at TELKOM'S STANDARD TS & CS FOR THE PROVISION OF ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES & PRODUCTS as well as TELKOM MOBILE SUBSCRIBER STANDARD TS & CS... which say:

Telkom's standard Ts&Cs...

refers to "SE" and "Selected SE" as equipment used by customers to access telkom services;

it states that Selected SE's are provided in a sealed package and that cannot guarantee that the Selected SE is in good order.

it goes on to say that should a Selected SE be faulty/defected etc. within 6 months after delivery, then a consumer must immediately notify Telkom. (this is in line with CPA) it goes on to say that the device + packaging + proof of purchase must be produced.

it then states that:

8.1.5 Further to clause 8.3, the acceptance of the returned SE by Telkom is subject to the following terms and conditions:

8.1.5.1 the Selected SE will be sent to the Telkom technical centre for further examination, and analysis, which will take no longer than 3 (Three) weeks or such a longer period as notified by Telkom;
8.1.5.2 acceptance of the Selected SE is on behalf of the manufacturer and is not an admission of liability by Telkom, or Telkom acting on behalf of its suppliers or manufacturers, that the Selected SE is defective or that it is not in accordance with the standards as set out in section 55(2) of the CPA;
8.1.5.3 Telkom will notify the Consumer as soon as is reasonably possible and within the prescribed period set out under sub clause 8.5.1.1 read together with the periods set out under the Minimum Service Standards of the results of any inspection and/or analysis and the cause of the defect and/or failure and whether the Telkom or the manufacturer of the Selected SE accepts responsibility or not for such defect and or failure.

8.1.6 Where on inspection it has been found that the Selected SE is not in accordance with the standards set out in section 55(2) of the CPA as the case may be, then Telkom, either itself, or on behalf of the supplier and / or manufacturer of the Selected SE will either, at the option of the Consumer:

8.1.6.1 repair or replace the failed, unsafe or defective part of the Selected SE; or
8.1.6.2 instead, at the election of the Consumer, refund to the Consumer the price paid by the Consumer, for the returned Selected SE, less any reasonable Usage charges.

in other words... they will fix the faulty part and not replace the entire unit. Or refund you.

Telkom's MOBILE SUBSCRIBER STANDARD Ts&Cs...

refer to "Mobile Devices" as:

"a mobile terminal, including without generalising, a cellular phone or handset, data device, module, computer or PC, and accessories that can be used by Subscriber to make and/or receive Mobile Device calls, and/or to send and/or receive Mobile Device messages (SMS) and / or the use of data services that are carried via the Network and/or to access the Network for the purpose of using the Selected Mobile Goods and the Selected Mobile Services

and "Mobile Goods" as "the Mobile Devices, which are offered for sale or rental by Telkom Mobile
from time to time, as set out under the Telkom Mobile Offerings Schedule"

Now... these Ts&Cs have a 7 day REPLACE clause which states:

8. “7 day out of box failure”
8.1.1 Where the Selected Mobile Goods are returned by the Subscriber within Seven (7) days after delivery, because they allegedly are defective or faulty then Telkom Mobile, once it has concluded that the Selected Mobile Goods are in fact faulty or defective, will replace on behalf of the manufacturer or supplier whatever the case may be, the Selected Mobile Goods with equivalent goods, provided such goods are accompanied with proof of purchase indicating that such goods have in fact been purchase from Telkom Mobile.

The rest of Clause 8 is pretty much identical to the standard Ts & Cs in that it talks about the assessment and then replace/repair/refund/etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK...

I would suggest that you check your invoice to see who you bought the device from. Either Telkom or Telkom Mobile.

That will allow you to determine which Ts &Cs govern the device...

I noted that when i signed the repair sheet it refers to my Phone/device and also mentions iPhones...

I also got an SMS that states "... your PHONE has been booked Refxxxxx.... we will contact you with updates. Telkom Mobile."

So... which Ts&Cs govern the LitBox?

1. I got it as part of my unlimited home package... which has ADSL, Landline and also a Mobile component (Sim card with 2 GB data every month)
2. As far as definitions go, the litbox could be either a Specific SE OR Mobile Goods
3. But the SMS references Telkom Mobile - so that tells me that the 7 day replace clause should come into effect.
4. The staff short circuit when you ask them about ts&cs and 7 day return policies, or CPA... they are only doing what they have been poorly trained to do, which is book it in for assessment (but they call it "repair" i assume that its internal jargon). So this is what gets you riled up is that you are not sure whats going on, but its cos their staff dont know either.

On a Final note.
CPA states that the customer may choose to have goods that are faulty within 6 months of purchase/delivery repaired/replaced/refunded. but be careful cos the Telkom Ts&Cs all mention that determining the fault is subject to an assessment by the Telkom Repair Centre... (which i think is stupid! and I'm sure we will agree that 21 days to check whether a usb or HDMI port is faulty is ridiculous.)

In my view they should have competent staff who can test and determine a fault in store. And managers who are able to make calls on replacing or repair.

ok that was a mouthful... sorry, I'm a Compliance officer... so i had to check it out...

Long story short.... they are just following their process, but, the process is Shyte.

questions??

questions??

Thank you for your helpful/detailed response Volksieboi.
Much appreciated.

I will pm any questions when needed if ok?

Yes it is sad to see how telkom treats their customers and their bad service.
I am just sick and tired fighting/arguing with companies like Telkom.
From long queues without getting acknowledged, customers turning around and leaving without any of the staff caring, bad training of staff, sitting on phones for hours, etc etc.

I ordered 2 miboxes from Miafrica after this whole sour ordeal with Telkom as well as issues with my apple tv.
In less than 48 hours it was delivered to my door in the small town of Hermanus which, trust me, is impressive.
From ordering, communication inbetween to delivery its been a pleasant experience. Made my day knowing that some companies still do care for their customers.

I feel for you with your box, just like mine (only 3 weeks old), heading to head office where someone there will attempt to fix it.
3 weeks wiil go by and after numerous phone calls, going into stores numerous times etc hopefully we will know what the result is.

Thank you again.

Do the Rii set of remote controls work with the LIT?
Any other remote controls that can be used?
Any 3rd party that use the BlueTooth Google Assist?
