Telkom Mobi pricing

I think this is a good example that the traditional concepts of a fixed line and mobile provider is starting to fade. One can also say that the traditional ‘bad guy’ can in some cases be the good guy and vice versa. I certainly welcome competition and lower prices, and whoever facilitates that should be commended. In this case Telkom is doing a good thing, and we hope the cellular providers will respond …

Yup.. and Telkom are in a VERY strong position to squash voda + mtn a bit if they market themselves right. Just think of all the sme's and larger corporates who would benefit from having one bill to manage especially with the Telkom mobile being on-net to Telkom landline.

Their mobile data packages are more attractive,i would sign up for one if i had coverage in my area, that said, this is still good for growing competition

The "Telkom Mobi Everyday Off-Peak" is slightly cheaper than my Weekender Plus with Vodacom (R109 vs R135 for Vodacom), and they give more minutes (150 vs 120 on Vodacom). They also give 30 free monthly SMSs (I don't get any on Vodacom) and 25MB free data usage (I don't get any on Vodacom). Their per-SMS rate is 50c per SMS (quite a bit cheaper than Vodacom, I think), and data is 99c/MB (vs R2.00/MB on Vodacom). The call charges look to be cheaper than Vodacom as well (Except for Vodacom to Vodacom, which is still cheaper than Telkom Mobi to Vodacom).

Will have to monitor what the people are saying about this over the next few months, but if all goes well, and I can get Windows Mobile phones reasonably cheaply on this (I work for a company that develops exclusively for Windows Mobile, so having one is quite important to me), I might just be sold! :)

Its sad that Telkom doesn't see itself as another network in south Africa but just as another technology they can add on to their list ..example WiMAX.

I have coverage and im glad to use the service, and I think alot of Internet users would( You would be shocked if you know how many people use their mobile's on virgin for Internet because of the 60c/pmb). Telkom prices for mobile is kinda low ( voice wise ) and mms/sms to certain degree...

Alot of adsl clients will move to 3G/HSDPA , spoke to an office and their happy to move to something that cost less and is faster!

I currently have a Telkom sim that I was given to test. On the coverage maps my house is about 10km from the closest area with coverage but with the Poynting arial I get a poor signal. The data rates are however very good. I get about 4.5Mbps down and about 800kbps up. Voice call quality very good.

I have the so-called fixed wireless option, with a local telephone number (011-xxx-xxxx) and this number works everywhere where Telkom have coverage. It is currently on a month to month. 24 month contract only when you get the modem or phone for free. If you buy this cash you can get a month to month contract.

Too late, too much service complaints and too expensive.

Although I tried VM a few years ago, I'm not even willing to test these Telkom products. They have seriously damaged their brand and reputation in the past few years and there is NO way I'll switch to them.
