Went to Northgate on Saturday to apply for the Unlimited Mobile offer.
Filled out all forms and handed in the damnable intrusion of privacy which they required in the way of documentation.

Got a call this morning saying my application had been declined by Telkom, as "there was something wrong" with my ID number.

Now, I have banked with that number, had numerous cellphone accounts, clothing accounts, internet accounts with it. I have even voted with that number like a good SA citizen.

And now they tell me there is "something wrong" with it?

I might add here that I've always had an excellent credit record, so that is definitely not the problem.

I now need Telkom to document exactly what is "wrong" with my ID number- in writing, please - as I need to open a case of Identnity theft or Identity Fraud at the Douglasdale Police station.

But do you think they even answer their phones? Hear that hollow ring!

I feel right now that I've probably been granted a blessing in that I've missed having to deal with a clearly fraud-enabling company for two years...but I still need their cooperation with the criminal investigation I am starting.

I would not jump to any conclusions yet, maybe someone else did use your ID number to apply for something, you never know. You might just end up being grateful that they caught it in time. By now you might have been married to a North African Merchant without your knowledge.

It is also possible that someone entered your ID number wrong into the system and didn't bother to check what was "wrong". Happened to me when I bought a house, bank said I was listed on the credit bureau for bad debt. Had a credit check done which revealed there was nothing, and then the bank said they made a mistake with the ID number.

Just had a very apologetic call from HO. They are a-feared there may be something wrong with their ID-checking app.
If I were them I'd be a-feared, too.

..and another one. All sorted, come pick up modem.
Well I'm not so sure I want to. That was a scary mistake they admitted to.

Last word from me is one of surprised praise for the social media team at Telkom.
They investigated and found their problem; which, fortunately for them, did not involve their software. Their wetware was the spanner in the works, and they did move to solve the glitch.

Mistakes happen. We all make 'em. It's pretty good of them to own up to it and work to fix it up.

I'd give them another chance if I were you.

what speeds do you get?
Use it for gaming?

Speed was up around 1meg yesterday evening on all devices - however, that was a traditionally busy time of day.

We have to go take the sim back in to the shop today as they gave us the wrong one (aaarggh..), so we haven't tested speeds this morning.

But no, neither one of us is a gamer. We're refugees from horrible Wifi service providers.
