Telkom Mobile LTE milestone

Switched from congested ADSL to LTE a month ago. I am at the border of the LTE range but still ave 10Mbps -12Mbps. Installed an antenna and now get ave of 20-25. Pretty happy with this. Some people are indeed getting 30+ with no antenna.

Happy to sign a 36 month contract too. For me, it's sort of a race to see if I would get VDSL in my area before the contract is done :) My money is literally on the contract expiring first. Telkom, prove me wrong.

Many thanks for the explanation.

And I thought buying a phone was simple!

Generally it is, it's just that in this case you are dealing with a "new technology".

As mentioned in the thread, chip-set manufacturers are constantly having to support multiple bands and modulating techniques, making it tricky to always balance cost, versus battery life, form-factor etc.

They have pockets with no bottoms... :) excuse the pun. If the **** hits the fan they will get a bailout from Government

The upper end 3G vs LTE benefits on smartphones are significantly smaller than the Edge vs entry 3G battle of a few years ago. Look at the lag it took before 3G was completely permeated through to handsets and then consider how important

LTE is great in that it really is able to effectively use whatever spectrum you give it and Telkom have got a significant footprint of LTE aimed at computing devices and for offloading by WiFi - if you have an LTE access point on a WiFi you have "LTE" on your devices in the area. From a network operator point of view having customers hitting 30Mbps on your setup and having uptake of a pool of clients on routers makes a lot more sense than targeting getting LTE to smartphones at 3Mbps. In the long run you really can't be complacent but I think Telkom and Vodacom are doing it right.
