Telkom Mobile R49 Internet starter pack launched

You get this free with the Telkom Simple deal as well as a modem... So this is amazing. It lasts about a month on my tablet as I have wifi at home.
 
Has anyone tried this? I bought 2 of the SIMs, neither work. I can call and get an IP address but no Internet data. Apparently they are having issues with the internet APN. Is this true?
 
I got my sim today..... Sadly the default tarrif plan is 8ta more and you are only able to change it to a non roaming sim......

Why don't they just kill 8ta more.... Sim Sonke is way better.....

Are you on TM network or roaming?
You won't get any feed from allocated data when roaming.

Yeah when I switched it on. I got 3 sms..... 1 saying welcom to telkom mobile my number is...... Second one said You have 200mb of telkom mobile data expiring on 01/12/2013 and the third sms said I have 7 sms/mms to use to tell people about my new number expiring in 7 days....

It does work
 
Getting a decent 1.5mbps... but its heavily dependent on where the 3G dongle is. Solid enough...will see how it does whilst travelling GP though...

When I first connected it I got 3mbps briefly before I got kicked off whatever network I was on. I think it might have been WCDMA.

Took me a bit of fiddling to get it to work too.

Open control panel > connections > adapter > right click modem > IPv4 > Set everything to auto. You can also try specifying a DNS like google's 8.8.8.8 but it doesn't seem necessary.

You can also use gingss's MDMA tool to troubleshoot to make sure you're on the right network etc.
 
Apologies for the necro, but does the 200MB of data on that comes with this deal rollover or does it expire in the month of allocation?

It expires and does not rollover, at least not with mine that actually expires in August come to think of it :(
 
It expires at the end of month, got the R499 for 1GB pm (12GB) one for a tweens tablet last month. Boy, that 1GB just lasted 15 days and was gone lol.
 
Thanks, i guess i shouldn't really care about not using up 200MB of data :o

It only got activated this week and I've no devices that need to use it :p
 
How do I check my data balance on Telkom's site? Or is the better way via the app that comes on the 3G dongle?

You can use the following methods to check the data.

via the app

IF you visit the website and app via the simcard then it will automatically log in and display the balance to you. If you are visiting the app via wifi or the website from a different connection you will be prompt to create a account and link your number to that account.

You can get these staterpacks from any Telkom or Telkom Mobile store.

I got my R499 staterpack from a Telkom store and they even ported my prepaid number to it. So I can enjoy the cheap rates of sim sonke and have cheap data too.

Thanks, is my sim card likely activated already (telkom shop gave it to me earlier this week) and 200MB allocated for May which will be lost at midnight tonight?
 
What size sim do you get ? standard / micro / nano ?
