Telkom Mobile roaming on Vodacom

2G equipment does not allow networks to broadcast more than one network code/name.

3G and LTE equipment allows multiple operators network codes / names to be broadcasted.

Therefore Telkom Customers can roam on Vodacom 2G, but not on Vodacom 3G or LTE.

3G and LTE will be seen as a home network, and not roaming on the Vodacom Network for Telkom customers.

How did I get Vodacom signal then? Didn’t test calls but data didn’t work.

2G, 3G or LTE?

Guessing 2G

You have no data connection. It appears to be a problem at the moment.
I'm currently chatting to a Telkom Mobile service agent and she's telling me to either manually connect to Telkom SA or Telkom SA-R (neither of which are available).

I stay just outside Cape Town CBD, where Telkom signal has always been bad. Roaming on MTN (automatically and forced) for at least 1.5 years with zero issues. Now with new agreement I have two options:
1) TelkomSA-R or TelkomSA > can use data but takes 5 minutes (I once timed it) to call through to my wife's phone lying next to me. She's also on Telkom. Signal comes and goes and data very slow.
OR
2) Now Vodacom (automatic and forced). Calls go through quickly if the person is also Vodacom but no data can be used even though I have all network data.

I know that. I’m saying it seems when you are on Vodacom directly, there is no data roaming allowed.
If you look at my screenshot, mobile data is turned on.

Only on Telkom or Telkom-R do you get data so you should hope your surrounding towers have been adjusted to give off the new carrier name/signal

Yup exactly the problem I've seen too. Vodacom 2G will connect, but won't give any data (despite.having all net).

But no one from Telkom cares AT ALL!

Please MyBB can we get this back to the top of the agenda somewhere???

Anyone from Vodacom maybe? able to help?

Is the Telkom roaming contract basically dead then? Vodacom won't give data on 2G... Vodacom can't transmit the Telkom-R name on 2G... so in short, Telkom now only roams on 3G, 4G...

So what is EVERYWHERE in South Africa outside of the major hubs expected to do?

my Telkom mobile service is pretty much useless. My data connections on LTE Telkom takes forever to connect with connection issues on WhatsApp constantly. Reception is horrendous and I'm left with no service signals often

at least previously I could roam on MTN with little issue despite 3G. Now with Vodacom edge ... lol, that's even if I manage to connect to Vodacom. really a massive step in the wrong direction. mybb has to get involved and do some proper Journalism into this.

And I'm in between Fourways and Sandton. so not like I'm in rural nowhere

I despise this, I used to have perfect Telkom signal everywhere I go, now I still have this but it seems that roaming has been given priority as the phone keeps switching to it, regardless of if I go and manually select Telkom. So far as I can see there is no way on android without rooting to force the selection of a network operator.

My LTE contracts keep connecting to TelkomSA-R, despite having TelkomSA home network availability, then I receive the 'paused' SMS messages.

Manual network selection works for a few minutes, then the cycle starts all over again.

Time to move on, Telkom seem to have no interest in solving this problem.

Yeah but move on to what?

@rpm can you not get @TelkomZA to speak up on this, as clearly this is becoming a huge problem just out of interest to the broader community?

Hey All

Ok wait, let me try get my head around this. I have the R99 deal for 10GB Telkom only Data.

So it should only work on Telkom's own network(Telkom) and not roaming (TelkomSA-R). Which I'm happy with and was explained to me at sign up.

Issue I have seems to be the similar to everyone else here. The Huaweii 3350 modem i'm using sometimes connects to TelkomSA-R without my input and then there is no throughput. I have to try turning the modem off and on or sometimes using the app to force connect back to Telkom, on almost every occasion there has still been Telkom coverage, but its perhaps weaker than R. I've also tried to make it manually only select Telkom but it does not stay on that for long.

Is there any way to force it to only connect to Telkom? Any other suggestions? I just signed up for this deal this month, so not a great start, can I cancel?

I think as per cpa there is a cooling off period for any contract ... and if this month you signed up think you well within the period

i eventually just cancelled my Telkom contract and went back to MTN, since then zero issues and proper coverage, my phone always has full signal 4G
