Telkom Mobile unlimited data advertising challenged

I don't know why ISP's still bother using the terms 'unlimited' as we all know that there is no such thing. When it comes to data there is always a limit and most ISP's have proven that.

The Completely Unlimited Data benefit is only applicable for Telkom Mobile’s data network and is governed by a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) of 10GB per month. The speed shall be throttled to 128kbps if a subscriber reaches a data usage soft cap of 10GB before the end of the month. The speed shall be reset to normal speed at the beginning of each calendar month alternatively subscribers can purchase once off or recurring data bundles.

Not really COMPLETELY UNLIMITED DATA is it now is it, which brings me back to the point I was trying to make i.e. there is no such thing as UNLIMITED data.

un·lim·it·ed

* Having no restrictions or controls
* Having or seeming to have no boundaries; infinite
* Without qualification or exception

* without limits or bounds
* not restricted, limited, or qualified: unlimited power.

* without limitations or restrictions
* boundless; infinite; vast
* without any qualification or exception; unconditional.

Not viable.

I looked at it - the data is not limited by usage, the FUP is clearly stated and Telkom avoided describing it as unlimited broadband. The completely here is tied to the general product being complete - data, voice and text

My view is it skirts the situation

FUP of 10GB makes it pretty lame as well

Sometimes a company just pisses you off with their poor service. When that happens, I too like to report them to the ASA for some or other infringement, since it takes for effort to defend an allegation than to make lodge one. With their current service levels, Telkom should expect this more often.

Not that I disagree with the complainant. Advertising needs to be clear, and putting an asterisk next to "unlimited" changes the meaning completely, which isn't allowed in terms of our current advertising regulations. The ASA needs to follow their own rules and find Telkom guilty.

Just a comment, the customer still has no re-course to get what was promised.... this is unacceptable, now a consumer has to report to ASA and Consumer Commisioner. ASA simply wrapped Telkom Mobile over the knuckles, still leaving the consumer in the dark.... Can I make a proposal...give what you promised...your network constraints is not a paying customer's problem.....pull up your socks Heldom.... :whistle:

I think that expecting a provider to provide unlimited data WHILE ROAMING is unreasonable. Who do they expect will pick up the MTN roaming tab ? As we all know, MTN charges like a wounded buffalo...
Any sane and reasonable person will understand that unlimited is only feasible within it's own network

reasonable person

There's your problem.

You get a certain kind of customer who just makes it there personal mission to complain about things as some kind of hobby. Do any of us have time to log ASA complaints or do we just move on with our lives?

Exactly. When I'm at restaurant, and there is an "all you can eat" special, I'm not going to complain to the ASA, "why can't I eat at as much as I like at the KFC down the road".

Maybe someone can clear this up. Does the MTN/Telkom roaming agreement also work the same as the CellC/Vodacom agreement where you will switch to roaming automatically when there is no Cell C coverage? Or does the user have to explicitly switch it on? I think the average user will see it as "If I have signal, I can use it".

If it just switches over automatically it would be more like being at an all you can eat restaurant and then afterward they tell you that some of the stuff is actually KFC and you have to pay extra.

I think it is unlimited. Yes your speed gets limited after 10GB but the data not. They do say get "Completely unlimited data" so technically they can reduce the speed but not allowed to limit the amount of data.

Its a very sneaky move but all operators are sneaky....

Even though the facility to have "unlimited SMS/DATA" existed I had all 6 my lines deactivat this service, to prevent these additional roaming charges.

I am VERY pleased that this has been raised.
I have to lock my phone to TM. This means often I enter areas without signal. So, for that reason, cannot switch to TM.
Have to keep Vodacom as my princaple contact number.

AND, cannot afford to let anyone else in the company use "Auto Network".
Who looks at their phones, in call, and drops the call to prevent roaming?
This is nonsense.

Only calls are not charged for when roaming. That part therefore is similar to Cellc/VodaC.
However, the switch is not seamless. Drops call, and sometimes the lag between dropping and roaming takes upto 1 minute.

Data is charged for when the towers switch, sms are charged for when the towers switch. And I hold my breath as the rates of the data charges (per mb)!
