Does anybody here have access details to the new Telkom Mobile Access Points? What are their names, what frequency range do they run? Where do you go to add your secondary MAC to be allowed on this AP?

Thanks in advance.

I have yet to see it work. Went to an 8ta store and they got no clue on what I was talking about. Tried to connect to a Telkom Mobile Access hotspot from my cell but could not connect. Sales gimmick?

Nobody here even knows how to set this up... I would like to connect from my Macbook, but nobody can help.

I went to the store and picked up the signal, but that is as far as I got.

8ta?

Telkom?

Most people in the stores dont even know how to set it up.

I spoke to guys from 2 different stores and they said "we are still waiting for telkom to come set it up."

I then went to the Telkom Direct Store and they said they also dont know how to set it up.

It seems like most dongles aren't capable of the sim-Eap authentication. Seems only to be smartphones and some tablets with built in 3G. So if u have a smartphone (galaxy iPhone etc.) you put the 8ta sim in there then somehow share the wifi connection to your laptop. I think - not certain that this is correct though

How do I link a secondary MAC address to the Cellphone number that has been allocated Free Unlimited Wi-Fi Access?
http://www.8ta.com/plans/wifi/

Log into the Self Service Portal at www.8ta.com/login and click on Link MAC address
Enter your wireless MAC address
And Click submit
Only one wireless MAC address of the secondary device must be linked to the Free Unlimited Wi-Fi qualifying MSISDN.

I dont get a "Link MAC address" option.

I think this wifi thing is a gimmick. Just like their 95c advert to claim that they have the lowest cellphone rates. Second month with 8ta and still none of the so called wifi hot spots accept my phone. From Canal Walk to Tygervalley to Parow Center and Bellville Telkom shop, none of them work. They should not lie and cheat customers.

I am on prepaid and receive this notifications about free wifi data every time I recharge. I am trying to get it to work. But as you suggested, it might be a scam.

Did anyone get this to work yet?

I finally tried this today over a coffee at McDs.

I got it to work using my E63 mobile, once. I disconnected and reconnected and it failed EAP authentication every time afterwards. I have 10GB of "fullspeed wifi access." The speed was beyond pathetic when it did work the first time.

I also tried the free 60 min daily wifi on my laptop (smsd to receive the code since I cant link my laptop's MAC with my SIM Card). Terrible, terrible connection. I cant comprehend it, I had full wifi signal (n band) and only 6.5mbps connection speed as shown in connection details. Telkom's own web page took about a minute to load and my mouse cursor froze every second for a few milliseconds as I tried to navigate. Very odd.

There was nobody else using the wifi in McDs as far as I could tell, unless the staff were abusing it behind the scenes. Was there for a while and it didn't improve at any stage.
