Telkom network freeze - do we need to worry?

How will this affect the line speed upgrades? I thought those were supposed to be put in place before the world cup?

I asked Telkom to upgrade my line speed from "Fast" to "Fastest" about 2 weeks ago. Still waiting.....
Guess it will only happen after the WC?

“In essence, no planned maintenance or upgrades will occur during the predefined time period. Importantly, however, all normal service restoration and service installations will continue as usual,” said Sallie.

“Telkom anticipates no disruption to our customers while ensuring that, as a national champion and a key service provider to FIFA, we deliver a flawless 2010 FIFA World Cup to the world.”

Complete and utter bulls**t. I have been waiting since 29 April for my ADSL line transfer to Webafrica. When I asked Webafrica's support why this is taking so much longer than usual they said it was due to Telkom's freeze period (which I hadn't heard of until then).
Considering that this is just admin work since I already have an ADSL line (as far as I know), this is unacceptable. For people who are ordering ADSL for the first time either because they're switching from something else or moved into a new home this adds an unnecessary delay.

Read the article. Normal business requests continue as normal.

WA are bullsh*tting you. It has absolutely nothing to do with the FIFA network freeze.

You usually find that you get better performance during these times, because there is no maintanence being done and therfore less that can go wrong. Every December till January there is a freeze period as well

So to be clear, this wouldn't affect requests for ADSL line upgrades? I was planning on upgrading from my 385kb line to a 4Mb line at the 1st of June, now I'm worrying that I postponed the decision too late.

See post above yours - QFT !!!!

Is anyone else, for various reasons, starting to really hate FIFA? ;)

Ive been on the boycott of the FIFA World Cup for months. FIFA operates like a damn country and have more rights than South Africans.
I don't want to go off on a tangent.
As for Telkom - More of what you get when Government Runs the Show.
Don't expect improvements.

If you know enough to say that WA are bullsh*tting me then why not give me a clue?
WA have submitted the order to Telkom, so it's in Telkom's hands. And it is taking longer than the 7-14 days given as an estimate (and I've heard other people tell me it took less than 7 days for them before the network freeze). So the logical conclusion to me is that WA is right.

Perhaps not such a bad thing for the other providers who are not in freeze mode. Anything to catch up to the Evil T.

great, so that means that due to my cables being stolen again for the 2nd time this month that it will take that much longer before I'm online again.

It is possible that they ran out of port capacity, which would mean another DSLAM, which means a network change. The feedback you got could be right.

And only if that DSLAM in in an exchange that has a direct link involved with providing FIFA links.

But in this case he has an existing ADSL line/port and it is being transferred to WA.
