We are tied into a long term (4 years to go) contract with Telkom for the rental of the Opticon IP PBX.

Please advise me on how we canintegrate VOIP with our Opticon PBX. Apparently the Opticon is not SIP enabled.

One VOIP provider (VBX) wants us to cancel the Opticon contract (which includes huge penalties) and to install their PBX.

Any ideas?

You would need to install a gateway device to covert between VoIP and PSTN/ISDN. Although the Opticon is LCR-capable, getting Telkom to implement LCR will be difficult, so it's better to go with a multi-path gateway.

Opticon is a modular system, so there is no simple answer as to which gateway without first seeing what types of lines you have (e.g. regular analogue, ISDN, etc.) and how many. But - provided you haven't mixed and matched line types over many years of unplanned organic upgrades - you should find a Quintum gateway (or similar) to match.

Other option - if you Opticon has ISDN interfaces - is to trunk it to an Asterisk box and route some extension ranges via the Opticon and others via the Asterisk. Over time, you'll get more extensions on Asterisk and in four years time you can dump the opticon altogether.
