Telkom outgoing mail server woes

Good morning
I'm trying to help someone with a mail sending problem on Telkom ADSL with a mail account. Last time this problem occurred, I set the outgoing mail server to and it worked for a week or so.
I've seen so many times where it's an either-or case. One day works, other days it won't and then will.
Problem is, sending through takes HOURS to deliver. When I setup the outgoing mail server in Outlook to use a Gmail account to send out, it goes out and is received immediately.
I'm really at the end of my rope here. Anyone have some advice? Telkom customer support is totally useless in addressing this issue.
I can't see how this can be a software issue if mail leaves the outbox, and Gmail delivers immediately, while Telkom's SMTP server delivers after 7 hours.
