Telkomsa.net outgoing email problems

Telkom and email? Run away.

I had a client who had an Intekom address that they could not get rid of. Email goes down at least once a month, takes almost two days to come back up.

Telkomsa SMTP

I use a telkomsa.net email and Rain as a ISP. Is there a SMTP that I can use to send Telkomsa emails using Rain.

I recently ran into a similar problem with a Telkom email address which had been ported to an iGen\Herotel Fibre account.

Not one of the 'known' smtp servers (smtp.telkomsa.net; smtp.dsl.telkomsa.net; smtp.saix.net; smtp.uls.co.za [now redundant]; webmail.telkomsa.net) would send.

In desperation I replaced the outgoing server name with it's IP address (196.43.0.142) and this worked!

If anyone has an explanation for this I'd love to hear it

DNS.
IP gets translated to a host name through DNS. That's the function of DNS.
Try any other DNS Server like Quad9, Google etc.

If you're with TelkomSA.net, get yourself an Outlook.com or Gmail address, set it up to pull in the TelkomSA email, and stop using the TelkomSA email address. It's just endless problems, and getting a decent email service will make a huge difference.
