Telkom prepares for SAT-3 competition, denies capacity problems

Does this mean that the SAT-3 and SAFE , 200GB/s would be 0/GB's available to the rest of SA if say 50 000 people all with 4mb/s connections were downloading intl linux distro's (p2p torrents hehehe) at max all at once!!

This means we could never ever get uncapped 4mb/s???
 
This makes me happy. I am starting to get a warm and fuzzy feeling. :)
 
excuse this silly question, how does one upgrade an undersea cable? Also, would there not be extensive downtime?

I think they add more frequencies which travel through the cable or something in that line. Just a wild guess. The cables have been upgraded many times before and we didn't experience downtime...or maybe "cable breaks" were used as excuses ;)
 
Good question that. Just how do you upgrade that cable?

Not upgrading the physical cable, just the equipment.

Not sure what exactly that means either though. :D Adding light waves of different frequencies seems to makes sense.

Fibre technology is constantly evolving. Various modulation methods have been made available which increase the fibre carrying properties which I believe can be implented without cable replacement.

you dont upgrade the cable you upgrade the landing stations equipment that sends/receives the info. theres no need to upgrade the cable there future proof
 
The cable is designed to carry an x amount of data, eg 1 terabyte per second of information. However, when the landing station is built, it is only set up with a capacity of say 50 Gbps. Its just a matter of upgrading the equipment to eventually handle the full capacity.
