Telkom prepares for SAT-3 competition, denies capacity problems

I've just been idly browsing for info on submarine cables in general and came across this page:

VSNL is only an investor in SAFE - which runs between SA and the far east - NOT SAT-3. They will still have to rent capacity from Telkom even after SAT-3 is declared an essential facility.

Aren't they a SAT-3 shareholder? Thought I heard that somewhere.

They are a SAT-3 shareholder as well, and rumour at the time was that their shareholding in SAT-3 was bigger than Telkom's. We'll just have to wait until November and see.

Seacom's initial capacity will only be 80 gbps. There is simply no demand for anything higher right now. That is less than Telkom's current SAT-3 capacity.

haha... I hear you... but no seriously... even if we all started download a full DVD with our 4 mbps ADSL lines, we would still not max out both SAT-3 and Seacom at their current speeds.

Yep, but by then Seacom plans to be running at full capacity, and there will be two more cables here. We will still be unable to utilise the full capacity!

I'm sure a lot of people here think companies like Telkom are sitting around until one day somebody goes "oh crap, seacom is launching tomorrow!" then they upgrade sat3 overnight. Haha, it is all planned waaaaay in advance.
