Telkom prepares for SAT-3 competition, denies capacity problems

Strange though that Telkom did not threaten to sue when Ivy declared that Telkom will to allow access to other providers. Something must've been done in the background. I guess firing Papi was the start.

Good to hear...hope we get some decent bandwidth prices at the end of the year.
 
Telkom said that the SAT-3 and SAFE submarine cables were recently upgraded to 120 Gb/s and 90 Gb/s respectively and that further upgrades are technically viable.

That's nice I noticed it in my sudden increase in cap from 3GB to 3GB, and from the sudden drop in prices from R245pm to R245pm. Thank you Telkom!
 
So first telscum tells us the price is so high because the SAT3 cable is over utilized and now they say it is not :confused:

“These cables constitute a complex network and the utilisation is continuously monitored and plans executed to avoid the occurrence of any bottle necks or capacity shortfall. The current capacity growth rate depicts that a next upgrade of these cables will be required during 2008/9,” Telkom said.

Utilisation would obviously depend as to where bottle-necking is taking place. If, for instance, Telkom was (heaven forbid) throttling traffic before it was routed to SAT-3, then maybe the monitored stats would be as much use as a bicycle is to a trout.
 
The sat-3 lotto hope it does not go the same way as the Lotto
 
clearly the fact that telkom is prepairing themselves for this, means something will happen, but until i see the some serious price cuts and way more bandwidth, then, and only then i'll believe its helping!.

3gig is a handout of bandwidth, its an insult!.

I want to see actions,
* ADSL/WIMax rental prices mus be dropped or include core bandwidth offering of 3GB

* ALL Local access must be UNCAPED UNSHAPED UNRESTRICTED

This will be a sign of better things to come until than we are just being swindled around whilst companies are stealing our money and destroying economical prospects in SA!
 
Interesting to note that the acting Telkom CEO is more inclined to work than make huge public statements. He acts more like a CEO of a public traded company than a populist manager of a parastatal making bold claims every other week.

Well if it all happens as it states in the article, ^5 for telkom. Then we just need at least 2Mb connections for cheap
