For anyone interrested, here's the Telkom annual results for the year ended 31 March 2005

You should be seeing it all over the media today as well

Nice Whopping R6.8b profit after tax...

Interresting to note that even despite all the retrenchments their employee expenses are still up... unless i'm reading it wrong it seems the telkom fatcats are lining their pockets as the field and operational staff search for new jobs :p

You can find the JSE news release here:

Vodacoms Annual results have also been published:

scuse me while I rush out to empty the contents of my stomach on the closest Telscum box.

R215.63c a second in nett profit for the year, weekends and holidays included.
Sickening.

I think i'll bite my tongue on this one.

/start ramble

Must be a great day to be a Telkom shareholder...

This is evidence that our government is not interrested in eleviating poverty as they are clearly promoting the formation of an elitist society at the expense of the less fortunate.

Mr Mbeki should be ashamed to allow this kind of profiteering to continue. In my books it's no different to what Zuma has done. Sorry if that seems harsh but looking the other way is the same as stealing.

Where are the 'good' guys and does anyone in power actually care about the situation... or is all that crap we hear every 4 years truly just marketing BS from campaigning electorates.

I read in another thread about all the schools that could have had internet access by now with as little as one day to one weeks profits from telkom. Probably less with these kinds of profits. That is a sickening thought... that the big bully doesn't even care about the youth in this nation and how desperately they need information to empower themselves and create a better future for EVERYONE.

Can this country not see the benefits of allowing free market forces to prevail... just look at countries like Dubai and Singapore.

/me screams out loud to the powers that be... WAKE UP !!!!

/end ramble

Okay - so who exactly has not bought Teklom shares yet ?
It takes a great deal of money to conquer Africa (And to takeover Vodacom legally).
Just buy the shares already.

Nope, I'd rather die a porper :)

Well, i'm sure that anybody could make those profits given the same circumstances. This has to stop. That 6.8bn was paid for by the country, but the country doesnt get anything back!

Did they also make available their spendature on infrastructure?

"Telkom is steadily becoming a world-class operator and continues to deliver on its commitments as a leading driver of transformation and progress in South Africa. This all-round achievement reflects a business that I believe has found its balance."

Erm, it seems to me that they are steadily becoming better at stealing our money, not becoming a world-class operator. The SERVICE is the problem, not the money stealing.

Good on you Telkom. Rob us while you can

dont. i think earnings like this are soon to be a thing of thepast - look at how all the press releases so far carry a veiled warning - they all refer to the incumbent as the ONLY provider.

Make me sick to think I actually contributed to that R6.8bn profit...

But then again, Telkom is a monopoly... I didn't have a choice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Um - 2.2 bn (about) + 5.5 bn (about) + 6.8 billion rand over 3 years = about 14 billion rand profit.
Raped to the tune of 14 billion, and nobody want's to buy shares, I don't getit.
How else are we ever going to get any of the loot back?

What I have to say about the situation will have me put in jail, onionpeel.

Compare Teklom with Voda :: Revenue increased by 19.5% to R27.3 billion (2004: R22.9 billion), which has translated into a 23.9% increase in operating profit to R6.5 billion (2004: R5.2 billion). <http://mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=345>

Excluding the R268.4 million impairment of the Group’s Mozambique assets, the operating profit growth was 29.0%.

Now there's a ripoff company if ever I saw one, and this is the way most of the country communicates. Loooooooool. Man governmint is so protecting us, and looking after our interests. Ha Ha Ha Ha.

Whatta joke.

Those DSLAMS must be paid off long ago...Telkom drop the ADSL line rental you overgrown profiteering bunch of a.......

Mmm was just wondering.. Government owns 38% of telkom, so therefore 38% of that R6.807bn is theirs. This equates to R2.586bn.

Now is this R2.586 billion spread throughout the Members of Parliament? I wonder how much Ivy recieves off that... Figures why the deregulation process is taking so long (if at all).
I must add this if any of this is wrong, please dont hesitate to correct me :)

38% shareholding does not equate to 38% of profit - look at dividends and net value (i.e. 38% of telkom share capitalisation value)

dividends - haven't really been paying attention but total R9 dividend X no of shares govt holds = massive amount

have a lokk at adLo (or is that aLdo)'s sig - it has the expected revenue figures for the department of communications
