On Friday my ADSL connection went down so I phoned Telkom on 0800 375 375. The Telkom guy said they picked up a fault on the d-slam at my local exchange and that I can expect it to take 4 to 5 days to be repaired for a residential fault.

I was wondering...how does that compare to international repair times?

Well in the UK if there is a problem at your house a tech will be there within an hour or two to sort it out...
Makes you think.

having dropped connection problems and caled Telkom. That afternoon they came. Rather surprised. problem is they don't know why my line is dropping and blamed it on my non-Telkom phone and then said it must be my non-Telkom router...sigh.

Mine went down during the storm Friday night. Telkom just got it up and running 30 minutes ago.

Wow, same days service?

@ raVid

Yeah, as South Africans we pay more than triple their broadband rates in the UK and then we have to wait like 72 to 100 times longer for a repair? This is not cool.

While my ADSL is down I have to use Vodacom GPRS. So the longer Telkom takes to repair my ADSL line, the more profit they make by having me pay per MB to use GPRS. This is so corrupt. Only in South Africa can companies make more money by providing poor service levels!

My brother is having the same problem and they tell him the same thing, let me know if you solve yours!!

I've had the problem since Telkom installed the line. First month worked well then line drops started plaguing my line. 50+ drops per day. Telkom techies came and went. Fault log after fault log. Till the guy came and replaced a wire at the exchange. Apparently stripped down cos it was so old and ADSL worked well for a few months. Lately when it started getting windy and with the storms, I'm experiencing the same prob again.

When techies come and start blaming it on your phone, modem then u know they don't know what they talking about. Ask them to check the line...sending a signal back to the exchange won't work as disconnects are random. Tell them to check the wiring.

Telkom service times really depends on area I think. I got ADSL in three weeks. Friends living in a suburb down the road has waited for 3 months and nothing. Same goes for fault logging. Live in an area with not many townhouses, clusters i.e) less densely populated compared to the areas such as Northern JHB.

I'm starting to suspect that's the reason Telkom's faults reporting and services are so random.

i've given up with calling telkom! You sit on hold for about 30 minutes, you tell them the problem. They tell you to reset your router a hundred times. They make you check all your phones and etc and they still can't find the problem! Nowadays it's quicker for me to wait for the line to come back up :/

Dropped connection

I have given up trying to phone and explain to those morons that I have exactly the same equipment that used to work very well six months ago, and that this could not be the reason for the continious dropped connections. And best of all, we all agree that this is not the problem, and ..... I am still experiencing continious dropped connections - trust the new South Africa.

Am concerned about the ADSL line dropping everyday at the same time....you can imagine..we are a business and Telkom line will just drop just like that and it will take them a while to fix it.

Secondly you phone them...they tell you "we don't have any connection problems on our side check with your ISP" I mean at one stage I had to change the routr 3 times bofore they came on the 4th day.

As I talking to you folks....SAIX has its own problems....we can't send e-mails out and a romour is going around that SAIX is blacklisted......anyone has any idea about this....please assist...Mind..when I ping the SAIX...am getting Replys but still can't send e-mails out...who can assist guys..

I know exactly what you mean. I have had my ADSL connection for almost 2 years now. Since then every time it rains my connection drops, interestingly enough it does it when it's really hot too. I have called telkom out numerous times, but to no avail. Now here is the real burner...I have another voice line on the other side of my house and that connection is perfectly stable, they will not join my office line to the other, working, line!

Now as far as repairs are concerned, my voice and ADSL line when down in the storm on the 11th of October and I am still waiting for it be repaired! I tell you one thing I'm not paying for the two weeks or so that I haven't service!

OUr business adsl has been down for a week, I have been "prioritised" twice and still nothing. Today I phoned and their call center is engaged...
