Telkom SDSL Etherlink now available

Telkom once again shows that they have NO IDEA what they are doing and just wasting funds. I don't even think anyone in management knows how to manage a business let alone anything about telecommunications and moving forward. Do they realize how important this sector is to the youth and the economy?

They are releasing crappy technology and you know the price for this service is probably going to be insane, but here is the kick...PEOPLE WILL SIGN UP. Sigh...

I hear you man.. And anyway... Why can't Telkom just for once do a proper equipment roll out? Is it really that hard to first have a product and then sell it? lol! pathetic.

Hi...Do you mind divulging the company..We have been trying to get fibre to our offices for yonks..

Just called Telkom Business Sales..The product does not exists as no-one knows what SDSL is..

"Telkom was asked for feedback about their new Etherlink SDSL service, but the company did not provide feedback by the time of publication." hahahahahahaha Telkom is like screw you Mybroadband

We have had a SDHSL connection betweeen us and the Univarsity of Stellenbosch for years now, 384K Upstream and Downstream. Whats "new" because Telkom has had the technology for years now in place and it works!

TELKOM focus on 10Mb implementation you bunch of useless cretins !

Unless i am missing something...i do not see the point of this. 10mbits dsl can provide 1.5mbit upload speed. That is 200k less than the sdsl service. 10mbits line will probably be cheaper as well

64k should be more than enough for anyone. :erm:

That's over 2 minutes to upload/download 1MB. Doesn't sound too bad, but it won't work for anything other than browsing and email. Those who need fast upload speeds shouldn't even consider 64kbps.

afaik it is to replace all existing Diginet services due to technology and equipment availability issues.

You have the cat by the proverbial tail there my friend. It's totally different technologies aimed at different markets. Telkom's Diginet/Martis infrastructure is way more prevalent throughout the country than dsl. DSL technologies is not a substitute for dedicated leased line services.

They tried to move the Diginet subs over to Martis/SHDSL but the subs rebelled as the product was too expensive. Is this Plan B?

Well, this is exactly where the product is being aimed, but instead of transporting syncronous serial data from point-to-point, it does Ethernet frames. Even the pricing of Etherlink is only moderately cheaper than the same speed/distance Diginet link.

Big picture it should make sense. While the initial footprint is small, Telkom will be dual-purposing the rollout of their newer DSLAMs & MetroE backhauls (SDSL just another card in the same chassis), so coverage should grow quite rapidly.

PS: End user pricing not avaliable as this is a wholesale only product (for now).
