Telkom SDSL Etherlink now available

For businesses where uplink is more important than downlink, this is great news. Now for the costs....

hmm 64 Kbps...I thought we have moved on from dial-up speed. Would that even be fast enough for a business service of any form? I certainly can't think of a reason why I would drop my office ADSL line (which has a higher upload speed) for a symmetrical speed of 64 Kbps, at probably a much higher cost. What am I missing here?

Telkom really is not getting it, are they....

HUH? Been using this service before I can remember. We have about 10 clients using this service, so unless Telkom are now changing things, this is not new.

The restrictions at the moment is that to connect branches they must be in the same exchange, so again, unless Telkom are improving things, this is not new. BTW, it costs R700 p/m and we get between 2meg and 5 meg depending on the router and distance.

On the bright side, Telkom will guarantee you a 64K connection at the very least.

Had a company offer us a 10mbps symmetrical fiber line to our building for cheaper than our 512k leased line. Sufficient to say we want in :D

whats sdsl for? just so u can "lan" to your other branch?

Essentially a leased line (Diginet) replacement. Inter-branch connections are an obvious use for this product, but many other purposes as well since it provides guaranteed bandwidth.

it just shows you, hou far behind in telecomunication technology we are in SA.......... ai toggie..

this will be interesting. think I will get a line at work to test out how well it works. so take it you will get a static IP with this and then do you still have to load your standard ISP account in the router or does telkom provide the account and if so what is cap on the account monthly

It is understood that Telkom currently supports SDSL at 42 exchanges, but that this number will grow significantly in 2011.

Again with the exchange roulette. Seems with Telkom you can only get some services when you throw the bones a certain way.

Telkom once again shows that they have NO IDEA what they are doing and just wasting funds. I don't even think anyone in management knows how to manage a business let alone anything about telecommunications and moving forward. Do they realize how important this sector is to the youth and the economy?

They are releasing crappy technology and you know the price for this service is probably going to be insane, but here is the kick...PEOPLE WILL SIGN UP. Sigh...

SDSL is available by configuring it on the DSLAM, no need to upgrade anything. This was actually already demoed to Telkom in 1999/2000 (4Mb/4Mb SDSL on ADSL1).

Sooo... Telkom has decided to move backwards. We need an Egypt style uprising here.

Pricing has been revealed, it will be a billion Rand per month for the 64Kbps option, and a trillion for the 1.752Mbps option. "This complements our 1200 baud modem access technologies" said a spokesperson. "We're also working on exciting offerings based on a technology called ISDN, since we found huge piles of old ISDN modems had been sent to our rubbish heaps from the first world".
