Telkom seeks R1.3bn outsourcing saving

This is bull... you will see the next time you go into a Telkom shop or phone then all that person will say is "oh sorry that's a whole different department I cant help you..."

a deal to outsource the care and maintenance of its core network.

May I ask, just WTF does telscum still do? They don't even maintain their own infrastructure any more? Come on, what the hell is wrong with that company?

Telkom just signed a R 1.7 billion deal with ABSA for a WAN network and now they want to outsource their core network?

Cutting corners even more won't win customers back! This is what you get when you put monkey's in charge that's purchased their qualifications! They are clearly using Chinese math to make decisions like this! Outsourcing also highlights the failure of all involved, and their willingness to create jobs for ANY South African - Loyalty is clearly not a priority because profit in their back pocket clearly rains supreme!

Oh yipee - does this mean they will pass on the savings to the end user and drop DSL costs.

/me wakes up from the dream!

How does the company to whom Telkom is going to outsurce the job manage to do it for R1.3 billion less? They cut corners, use cheaper equipment, pay employees less...and will probably employ a lot if not most of the people Telkom is letting go because where else will they find that many people with the skills and knowledge to maintain Telkom's network.

Why on earth does Telkom not just sell its core network to someone who knows how to grow it, maintain it and keep it profitable.

Telkom needs to cut running costs with demand dwindling. New customers signing up for its services are down 30% a year, and 28% of consumers and small businesses default on their bills.

The basics of economics state supply vs demand. The demand for overpriced, under-supported, bad quality service is, not surprisingly, low and getting lower all the time. If Telkom actually dropped their ridiculously high prices, they'd have a massive uptake as they are ideally (currently) positioned to offer what the consumer wants, they just choose not to. A**holes!

This is all a bit vague.

Outsourcing work doesn't cut costs by 1.3bn...it just shifts it another area (payments to the outsourcing provider). If it cut total cost by 1.3bn (i.e. increase profit by 1.3bn-tax) then they would have done it years ago.
