Telkom set for massive restructuring

How much of a restructuring is it really? And how much is it just doing a breakdown of reporting?

Retail <- Telkom Retail
IT Services <- BCX
Wholesale Broadband <- OpenServe
Real Estate

Not having mobile as a separate unit is awesome and the split between retail and wholesale is something almost everybody wants so the only real surprise is having a separate unit for Real Estate. And probably that is the unit that can be spun off because telecommunication companies will need less and less real estate going forward.

Can they just restructure their products please.

Getting ready for a strip and sell.

Someone has worked out that the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.

Spot on! Top Heavy at the top. Too few Indians to do the works that really earns the money.

I read somewhere that per kilometer of line Telkom have the most techies in the world, similar to SAA and the number of support staff per aircraft.

Might have been true a few years ago and also does not take into account that many telcos outsourced their field operations....

"The wheel om the bus, goes round and round, round and round..."

Headline for June 2018:

Telkom plans to merge the four separate business units into one company, giving each greater autonomy, Bloomberg reported.

Telkom restructuring- it's like VD, it comes back, every so often.

I have not looked that latest ITU stats.

There were two "indicators" used to measure staff related matters.

The traditional one was Lines/employee; and then later on, employees per "line kilometer".

Both were very open to abuse, problematic and difficult to verify.

The lines/employee one has become increasingly meaningless as Telco's lose fixed line subscribers --- There is a head count need to keep a telco running properly.

The line kilometer value is also an issue because how do you calculate the line kilometers in a network now dominated by optic fibre? So frankly, any "evaluation" done using these indicators is just BS.

Retail - Telkom
IT Services - BCX
Wholesale Broadband - Openserve
Real Estate - Gyro Group

This quite a joke actually.

When the now infamous restructure happened with the intro of that bunch of Americans happened, there was already a proposal on the table that was exactly the above, but that these would be "Business Units" not separate companies.

So as MickeyD has already said YAWN!

Come up with something new please!

Here's what I don't get about Telkom. How do they as a State Owned Company manage to do as as they see fit to improve their business including restructuring? Even if you don't agree with their vision, give Jabu Mabuza and Sipho Maseko credit that they somehow convinces government to leave them alone to run as a private business and not a state capturing target. If only this was also possible at Eskom, SAA, Transnet, SABS, <add all other SOCs here>
