Hi. Hope someone on here can help me with this.
So, just saw that I received a SMS from Telkom that goes something like this: Your suburb is now ready to be upgraded to Telkom's new wireless technology! A Telkom/openserve tech will visit your home during the next few days to switch your old copper-based service to the new technology. This switch-over is free of charge.
I did some googling and everything I could find points me towards FLLA. Has anyone else received a SMS like this? And what can I expect?
The most important question though is: I have 4 meg uncapped ADSL. It is the only reason why we have the line, we don't even have a phone connected to it. Does these FLLA support internet? OR will we lose our internet connection?

Telkom technician showed up at my mom's house last week and disconnected her landline from the pole. Replaced her ADSL with LTE and a wireless phone that seems to be Android powered.

The thing is, I saw various complaints from people saying that their ADSL was cancelled and that you only get 10GB with these things. Once that has run out, you have to buy more. If that is they case, I am not interested in this thing and they must maar switch off my line

Over time, Telkom is discontinuing its copper services (landline phones, ADSL lines), throughout South Africa. There is information on these forums, and in My Broadband's news articles. Do a search in these forums for: Telkom copper; VOIP. FLLA. Also, read this article and all the comments replying to it:

Let this be a lesson for those that want basic services privitised. Private sector want all, big promises, starts with a funfare big initial parties of success(They are as positive as hell), then later all that is forgotton, and services are shedded where its not "profitable".
And you still want to privatise Eskom-?

Privitisation has a plase in basic government services, but that is in engineering/supplying the infrasructure on long term agreements at affordable non ripoff prices, thats usually stable worldwide companies. They definately do not run the service on a daily basis. So the private sector is already there, just not as you think.
-The privatisation of the availability of infratructure is a very old practise which worked well.
-The running/repairing/maintaining of the service derived from the private availability not, and for very good reason.
---If you try to twist this for quick financial gains, people are going to get angry down the line for obvious reasons. So don't privatise a basic service twice, it will severely distort job availability, lead to affordability issues, theres enough money in the original primary privatisation availability of it alrady, the private sector should be happy with that meal already, you can eat only so much from the same table.

I read all of it before posting. Still didn't answer my question though.

FLLA needs internet to work. So if you are in a Fibre area they will install a fibre router, if not they will give you an LTE router with a limited package. I think around 50gb if you had 4mb line initially.

Geez hell no. We currently do 300 gigs plus a month. No thank you

Speak to the technician when they arrive. The one that went to my mom's place was pretty nice and put her on a 100gb LTE package in place of her old 8mb DSL line. It's a crap shoot if your area is not covered by fibre. You could always upgrade to a higher cap package.

I am no expert, just a lay person learning from this forum. This what I understand. FLLA is a phone. It is a cellphone that looks like a landline phone. It makes and receives phone calls over the cellphone network. It has to be charged to be used. It can only plug into a power outlet, and can not plug into a Telkom wall jack, or a router, and therefore can not be used on a fibre connection or as a VOIP phone. The SIM from the phone can probably be put into any cellphone (but check this with Telkom). The monthly rental on this phone is R199/month. Telkom offers various monthly calling plans on top of this monthly rental for FLLA phones (https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/shop/home/plan/smartvoice-basic-pv/ ). The FLLA phone is not a modem, but like a cellphone, can be used as a hotspot to use the small amount of data that you get with the phone (again, check this information with Telkom). An alternative to landline phone calls and FLLA phone calls are cellphone calls (I am using a Cell C anynet voice plan), VOIP, and then more expensive options via satellite dishes and satellite communications.

For internet connection, you will have to replace your ADSL connection with connection via fibre, or cellphone network (mobile data or fixed LTE data), or satellite. It is likely you will have to replace your ADSL modem (router) with a modem appropriate to the type of connection you choose. You will also have to choose the appropriate amount of data for your needs. You can choose any ISP (Internet Service Provider) you want. This can be Telkom (also called Openserve), any other ISP (there are many, eg Axxess, Afrihost, Webafrica, Mweb, Vox, Supersonic, Cool Ideas, etc), or one of the 4 mobile operators (Telkom, Cell C, MTN, Vodacom). Some fibre and mobile network offers include the necessary modem for free.

Just putting it out there, my parents, in Roodepoort West, were given notice by Telkom that their landline will be replaced by wireless.
So this is not a rumour or joke anymore.
