Telkom & its copper network

It is fine that Telkom is shutting down its copper network but what about customers such as myself who have been told by Telkom that we do not qualify for the wireless telephone link as we are not using Telkom as an ISP.????

FLLA phones?

So Telkom phoned me today to say that they're cancelling all copper lines in my area and replacing them with FLLA. I get the device free, but... what is this device? I can't find much on the net, and the only pic I did find looks like the phone isn't cordless. I really prefer a cordless...

Thank your lucky stars that you don't get stuck with that piece of crap. Port your landline number to a VOIP provider like Freshphone and get your internet connection from someone else.

Telkom is only shutting down ADSL where they have Openserve fibre and LTE available. Even then they will offer you a FLLA solution and you would have to get your own data sorted. Right now people are more worried about what will eventually happen. Just relax and when you get the call or the service goes down you can make decisions then.

On a related/unrelated note. Can I legally remove the Telkom wires in my house? The ones connected to the wall socket and also running to the Telkom poll outside.

Just disconnect the main wire from your house and then wrap it around the base of the pole without damaging anything especially the distribution box at the top of the pole. If you want to be extra nice then wrap some insulation around the 2 strands so that they don't short. If your line has been properly disconnected they shouldn't short anyway but just in case.

My line was not dead so I simply terminated it on the block already existing right at the pole DP. If the line is dead you can remove it completely or cut it off close to the DP.

Around here the cables are underground and I have been wondering what to do with that cable - also worried about how they will go about pulling it all in.

As far as I know and I can be wrong but the copper line is the property of Telkom/Openserve and tampering cutting or removing it could be seen as copper theft or vandalism. I really doubt they will do anything but yeah that is what it is. A very big branch could have fell on it too.

It's an interesting one. On the one hand it's on your property, but technically the copper wire belongs to Telkom. That's why I suggest you disconnect the wire carefully from where it connects to your house and take it back to the pole which will usually be right on the boundary of your property and then wrap it neatly around the base of the pole. Like you say, a big branch could have fallen off and pulled the wire off your house.

The main cable feeding the DP on the pole is what will be recovered if anything. The black drop wire is worth nothing and the chances of it even been collected by the recovery team is pretty slim, given the levels of responsibility and accountability now the norm.
Underground cable is different, but even then, the last piece to your house may just be abandoned when and IF ever a recovery process is undertaken.

They may use it yet for fibre if they did not trench.

They have a servitude on the property, you can't remove it.

There are still people on that copper network btw, and they can decide to use it for fiber at any point.
