Telkom to kill and replace ADSL

Add to this will Telkom be able to give me 40Mbps down / 10Mbps up + 200GB + 1TB cap for R900 p/m.

I doubt it.

Hourly stats for the last 2 years

AVG Ping || AVG dL || AVG up
28.58575ms || 36.610Mbps || 9.489Mbps

I really wish for Telkom to just leave me the fck alone. I am happy.
I socially play games, Download every torrent known to man and Study. ADSL uncapped does work, LTE not so much... WIFI is terrible as ping spikes really peeves players off.

I followed it up after the highlighted part, like it is right there <_<. They have never contacted me to discuss moving me off DSL.

So they are not lying, it's not like they have started this mass ADSL shutdown, the only thing they have shutdown (from 1 Aug) and definitely tried to contact people about is PREPAID COPPER VOICE LINES.

Okay, hand is up. In the anger of the moment I mis-read that part, Telkom did not lie. So when is the planned cut off date? Still not going to go very far with the fiber plans being stalled and with LTE so crap.

This migration is one stage of Telkom’s plan to shut down its copper network entirely in the next five years, a strategy which was previously confirmed by Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko.

Nope, Vodacom. The coverage map even shows that on my street that cluster of houses are on the edge of the signal. The real painful part is that I have a MTN tower roughly 10km away from me and not even that can get me LTE. The land she is not flat...

Awesome.

She went to Telkom only for the clueless sales lady to say "Uhm I'm not sure, on all our products you must pay line rental"
Went to a Telkom branch to query about their LTE products , the lady checks her system according to their systems I don't have LTE coverage.

Went to a different branch and the lady there checked the system and according to their system I do have LTE coverage .

So I go back to the first Telkom Store just to check, and wouldn't you know it according to their system I don't have coverage.

You have to count yourself lucky to be getting any LTE signal at 10km. I'm about 2km from a rain tower and I only get 1 bar signal on a LTE router. I have a similar issue as you with the land being not flat at all.

I'm getting 10-15ms ping on ADSL. Online gaming with LTE really sucks since it's prone to lag spikes.

Oh well, I'm moving soon anyways so there'll be fiber in my diet and line.

Why would it require copper?

Most alarm systems I have worked with communicates with the alarm company via a pstn line/copper line. All these systems will have to be switched over to radio based communication.

I had a "great" experience with Helkom yesterday.
Reported a fault with phone and internet (ADSL home uncapped) a while ago and followed up yesterday. Was told the fault has been flagged as not repairing and they will offer something else  The problem is, in my dorp, Telkom wireless is pretty much non existent so they can't offer anything else. "Sorry there are no alternative options in your area, we apologise for the inconvenience":mad:.
I then called our local "Telkom" techie who popped over, checked the line and had me back up and running within an hour
WTF is going on with Telkom?

My experience with LTE was poor, and I wasn't even in a rural area. On the edge of Bryanston the DSL was also pretty bad until they had that uncapped LTE crap that they sold you with a 24 month contract. It worked really well for about 2 weeks, then it degraded to the point of being unusable between 6pm and 12am, and other times we got a cool 120kbps with pings in the high 200ms. Thankfully a year later we had Vuma save us with 200mbps fibre.

LTE is great if you are the only person using it. If they are replacing ADSL with LTE, it's gonna suck for everyone except them, because you will use less data and pay the same. Unless they are planning to replace all the ADSL exchanges with cell towers, this is a terrible idea.

Telkom prices are not competitive. They charge to much for slow speeds. Doing speed test you never get what you pay for especially during peak hours

Typical badly thought out idea!

I live in Stilbaai and we have perfectly good ADSL but if we have to move to LTE it means roaming on to Vodacom which collapses over the holiday period due to the number of visitors!!

There is fibre but it's only pulled as far as the ABSA bank as far as I am aware.

Does anyone have any contacts within the industry so we can try to prevent a disaster?

Its like you worried about Y2K and its currently 1995

I have an ADSL 10 mb/s home unlimited upcapped .What will happen if my home alarm works with my copper line and Telkom change over to wireless .
Will my alarm company still get notified if the alarm triggered .

They'll have you install a radio.

Should have done it already really.

It's been coming for a long time. But why is Telkom getting so much exposure being such an extremely bad ISP?

What is the hype about wireless, I yet to hear one good call from a cellphone or internet to a radio station as an incoming call. The presenter always sounds perfect, but the incoming callers sound like crap, sometimes very difficult to make out what they saying, landline=good quality, rarely a line hum or problem.
I noticed this a from a few years back when a huge hype was made about data with cellphones, so what went wrong here-?
So where are we going in/with this modern wireless world. I never had a single problem with the landline or ADSL as a result for many years. I hate to think I must use this wireless crap and pay for it.
