When BT first launched its VDSL2 FTTC service, profile 8a was selected, which used only 8.5 MHz bandwidth to deliver a maximum download connection speed of 40 Mbps. The use of a wider bandwidth allows VDSL2 to deliver greater speeds for households and business premises situated within about 750 metres of a fibre cabinet. In April 2012, BT implemented the 17a profile (using nearly twice the original bandwidth of profile 8c), allowing download connection speeds up to 80 Mbps. In the future, BT has the option to increase the bandwidth with VDSL2 even further (to 30 MHz), which would increase download speeds to well over 100 Mbps for premises close to the street cabinet.

The bandwidth used by G.fast is considerably wider than VDSL2 (about 6 to 12 times wider than current VDSL2 services). The use of higher frequencies inevitably limits the distance of transmission to a maximum of about 250 metres (and significantly lower than this for the highest speeds), due to strong signal attenuation at high frequencies. In the initial stages of G.fast deployment, G.fast technology will use the 106 MHz frequency band, although there will be the option to increase the bandwidth to 212 MHz in the future (to achieve even greater speeds).

Due to the frequencies used by G.fast, there will be a risk of interference to other services, including FM radio. Real G.fast deployments may require certain frequency bands to be ‘notched out’ to avoid interference with other services.

So very fast but extremely susceptible to interference and an extremely limited range.

So why is G.fast being developed when Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) (where fibre is laid all the way to the premises) could potentially provide even better performance than G.fast without its dependence on copper cables? The answer is cost. FTTP can be very expensive to implement (particularly in so-called ‘brown field’ deployments) with high labour costs. Austrian ISP A1 says that, even though FTTP remains its long-term vision, it considers G.fast as an “intelligent interim solution” until fibre has the same coverage as copper does today.

We certainly understand the frustration among some technology evangelists that the current deployment of FTTP is painfully slow since FTTP offers the ultimate in speeds and reliability. However, we have also witnessed the many challenges faced by Openreach engineers (shown below) laying cables in a BDUK project, with frustrating and time-consuming delays caused by numerous blocked ducts. Laying fibre to all homes and business premises in the UK would certainly be a very costly and onerous project! In 2008, Analysys Mason estimated that taking fibre to every UK home would cost as much as £28.8 billion (nearly six times higher than FTTC deployment, which is currently being undertaken).

Btw I would take anything A1 says as bull as A1 basically has a monopoly on Austrian fixed line and a large portion of its cellular network, they would take any excuse to twiddle their thumbs.

So 50Mbps when it reaches the 300Mbit mark as a max. (about 250m)

EDIT2: Do note that all these trials are done on good quality copper that has been maintained better than the copper here by Telkom.

You'll probably see about 10Mbps upload or so, since it's Telkom, best case scenario about 25Mbps.

I would doubt that they'd roll it out past a select few complexes where the copper is brand new as G.Fast is heavily copper quality dependent and is probably on par if not more expensive than Fiber (my guess, would love if someone has the actual cost, but I can't seem to find any articles on it). This is of course if they wanted to roll it out from scratch, not for complexes where the copper is already there as they're saying they're going to do.
 
Would rather have them invest in a price strategy to enable all that dead copper.

It is not redundant if fibre is not going to make it to your area. Many low to middle income areas or small towns might take 5-10 years in which case if Telkom roll out this on their existing infrastructure it eliminates the market for fibre in those areas. It is a land grand nobody cares if you want fibre. They just want business if they give it to you on this or fibre it means you are serviced look for the next client.

Well not actually. Telkom still has over 2 million leased lines so even if they deploy this on a fraction of that infrastructure it still makes business sense as they don't need to deploy fibre which is expensive and risk loosing the bsuienss to another fibre provider.
 
Meh!!!!!!!!!! who cares at this stage?? is it gonna be cheaper?? coz we are being ripped off with this line rental, cant even get LTE in my neighborhood and the max speed i can get is 10Mbps
 
I cannot event get 10mb/s @ my exchange.
I can get 10mbps, but for some reason there is a lot of noise on my line all of a sudden. My exchange supports VDSL but doesn't help when said exchange is round about 3Km away.
 
According to Wikipedia, for 100Mbit your loop length needs to be <500m. Good luck with that.

The cabinet where your landline comes from is most likely less than 500m. Like OneKnight said, this is FTTC and might actually be an option for me since FTTH isn't happening...

Well, good luck with that;
I have two "20Mbps" DSL lines.
Distance to the exchange is 2.1km.
Maximum download speed achievable on either is 13.5Mbps.
Will be going back to 10Mbps.
 
This makes sense from the perspective of gated communities and complex type housing. The way I see it is that its a lazy approach to getting faster connections in places that would have been fibre candidates to begin with. If there are no last mile changes needed then it should be faster and cheaper to implement.
 
Hurrah Hurrah - if you live in one of the major cities. But what about us folk in the smaller towns e.g. Velddrif, just 150km from Cape Town. We struggle to even get the maximum speed of 4MBs that is on offer here. Really, unless they start rolling out better speeds than 4MBs to folk like us, I couldn't care less about all their hype.

Find comfort in the fact that even those in big towns struggle to get even 4meg, but yes I do understand that people in smaller town are worse off.
 
Totally useless to us, when Telkom cant even get there copper lines sorted out in the Newer sections of Tongaat (not even 2km away from King Shaka Airport) because they feel there is no business this side, so Fiber and/or 100 Mbps, please don't make me laugh! Sort out the mess first then think about speed.

Who are they? So far fibrehoods are just as bad if not worse than Telkom.
 
Effectively, this is like getting fibre to your home and then using a LAN cable from your fibre router to your PC. Except now, the fibre router is outside your house a 100m away or so. So it is MUCH better than any flavour of DSL.

If today you "cant even get 10Mbps" on DSL, you will be guaranteed at least 10Mbps on Gfast because the distances are so short.
