Telkom to retrench workers

Why is retrenching happening now in companies........i thought the recession is over????maximum profit?

Telkom appears to have taken the outsource route quite often, don't know why, it doesn't save them much more money at all, however, trimming 4000 employees would look good on the books when it comes to their annual reports for stockholders etc

If anything Telkom should be hiring employees.

However if Telkom is getting rid of 4000 useless employees, I'll support them

Telkom has its own separate "recession" that has been going on for years, and without Vodacom to bail it out it's only going to look worse.

This impact temporary and contract workers.

Good move - now the permanent employees will have to pull finger and start working for a change!!

/time to trim the management levels, methinks!

Government's way of shirking their responsibilities to the workforce that has kept this behemoth afloat. Aah well, they've milked it dry now and won't lift a finger to help those who go down. Shareholders and ex shareholders will turn a blind eye - it's over. Perhaps they will disband and flog the assets. They won't be able to negotiate price under the current circumstances.

*Wakes up with cold coffee*

Telkom has realised that they have hired complete idiots!!!!!!!!!!!!

So they are getting rid of them ;)

It is the complete idiots who will be safe - retrenchments will not affect the boredroom (sic)

I'm guessing that most of these will be the guys who actually do the hard graft, and not any of the senior management? :/

Been thinking about this...

How is it possible to retrench temporary workers? On employment you tell them that their contract period is either for a certain period of time or for the duration of a project.

If no expectation of permanent employment has been created, then surely it is not retrenchment when the termination date is reached?

Outsourcing allows for tenders 2 be awarded 2 family members

Actually you find the opposite happens! the temp/contractor will work hard because his/her a$$ is on the line, the permanent workers a bit more laid back as there is an extensive procedure before s/he can be dropped. And then there is also the cost savings wrt shares and other funds etc Telkom gets to skip by hiring contractors. Basically its a work around the gov labour laws and so more and more bottom end positions become contractor/temp.. unfortunately for Telkom, what happens is the disadvantage kicks in, employee loyalty is a 2words not a value phrase these days and so quite often people use it as a springboard to gain skills/training(in house @ Telkom) and.. well.. you've called the call center/dealt with contractor technicians etc so you know the result.

...why not stop paying their CEO R24.MILLION a month; than hurting alot of people. that goes for EMPTY'N aswel...geez

You are 100% correct, which is why I said that the permanent employees will now have to work! BTW there are more than 4000 temp/contract workers, these are only those identified for contract termination...

@Vicehybrid: where did you suck that figure from?

They should split Telkom up into provincial subsidiaries or just flog off the assets to the up and coming...
