Hi

I wanted to get ADSL, but I don't have a link between my place and the exchange so the technician advised me to rather get W-CDMA. On investigation I noticed this to be 3G.

Could you give me some information on what its is, Pros/Cons, best modem to get, can I use it for wifi etc?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

W-CMDA is the underlying technology of most 3G networks. Telkom's offering is pretty good. In a good coverage areas you can download speeds of a few megs but it should be noted that the latency is no where near as good as ADSL. So long as your browsing the internet and not attempting to play games over the connection it should work well for you. Also Telkom have some of the cheapest 3G bandwidth rates but in general ADSL bandwidth is significantly less then 3G bandwidth. You can get a E220 modem (usb modem for a single pc, will have to share the connection if you want to connect other devices up) from Telkom for around R500 I think. You can also get a more expensive modem which includes wifi access point as well as 4 Ethernet ports for connecting up pcs and other devices to the network, think it retails at around R1000/
