Telkom warns customers against payment scam

I'll probably be eaten alive for this  .. but here goes:...
So why does everything always have to be turned into a Telkom bash session?

//Suits up in a fireproof suit to shield against the flames :D

Looking for a job at Telkom are we?
Owner of Telkom shares are we?
Cousin to nut case Lulu are we?
Basher of respectable, decent (and in some cases, good looking) MyADSL forumites are we?
Over generalising contradictor are we?
Fan of all that is Telkom are we?

No just kidding, you are right :D
We are just afraid this fraud problem may have arisen from within the belly of the beast!

I'll probably be eaten alive for this  .. but here goes:

I do sometimes get the idea that this is forum is a just a tad bit pessimistic and ever so slightly biased against Telkom... :p
I'm no friend of Telkom.. but seriously .. it's not like they did anything wrong by warning their customers about some fraud scam... is it?

So why does everything always have to be turned into a Telkom bash session?

Because we are angry and want to warn people about trusting Telkom, which, based on experience, we have learned not to do. We're simply seizing an opportunity to make more people a little more suspicious of Telkom, which everyone should be. So sue us!

We shouldn't laugh it off, there should be a method by which an individual can check if, how, and by whom their credit status has been checked, and if it has been check without their direct, written permission, they should be able to sue the living cr*p out of the financial institution that gave out their info.

If you get your credit report you can also check who else has accessed it.

Aah yes.. anger.. that which blinds mans reason...

IMHO jumping on Telkom at every singal chance we get may drive as many people away from here (meaning myadsl) as it might warn to "be suspicious of Telkom"...

It's like focusing so hard on one goal that everything else gets lost..

In the Linux world I've seen sort of thing several times .. (and probably been guilty of it a couple of times as well) - I'm refering to when us Linux users go on a rage about how rubbish and evil Microsoft is (which they are btw :p ) ... a good deal of MS users get put off Linux due to this "attitude" and they'll say things like: "The Linux community consists of disgruntled over obsessed cheapskates" (they'll probably use stronger language than that .. but you get my drift)

Anyway.. it's just my opinion...
Oh and no HosstheBoss I don't like Telkom nor am I looking for a job there or have any relations / shares etc... :D

Where does it say that she was a victim of the fraud? isn't she mearly commenting on it?
Not mentioned anywhere, but I'm left wondering if LooLooPoo herself fell victim to this fraud scam...

Of course you are correct - Telkodemonopolies did a good thing by warning its customers about a fraud scam [seemingly] involving Telkodemonopolies :).

Probably a stupid question but how do the fraudsters have access to one's account details and know you use a Telkom line, and then are able to get in contact with you as well?

One would think the only way they would know that is if they got the details from Telkom itself, surely.

They can deposit some moola into my bank account... all I will tell them is that they will have to wait a week or so... :D

Hmmm... the plot thickens... yellow pages/white pages for the numbers... but then that doesn't explain the account detail...

I run a credit check on you,

in there I have: your phone number
your street address
your postal address
your banking details
vehicle ownership details
obviously credit history etc. etc. etc....

Remember any form of debit, or credit purchase, hell they could get to you via your ISP if they want; if you pay by debit order

Give me your name and I'll tell you what size underpants your wear, if you have bought it by any means other than cash!

To much personal info is expected from us, way to much; and it's making life easy for the criminals!

redarrow, you are right to say that anger blinds people, and I agree that I have often been carried away by emotion, and that this has not been good for our 'cause'. But one can't be involved in these telecoms issues and not have some large pool of passionate emotion driving the involvement, so the anger is bound to slip out at inappropriate times, as it has done so here. Please point this out again in future- sometimes I can't see straight and it feels like there is fire in my head.

Hmmm I wonder which ISP LooLooPoo uses at home...could it be...surely none other than...TelkodemonopoliesHindernet...

Where does it say that she knows how to use a pc? doesn't she merely live in a "happy place" free of intellectual pursuits? :p

Haven't read the whole thread, but FYI, when such a person comes to you saying this and that. Check your bank account's AVAILABLE balance. Take all their details and after you've done so, tell them that as soon as the cheque has cleared you will make sure they get the money back.

They will definately come with some sort of story to try to convince you otherwise. Pick up your cellphone and pretend to call the police. See them run.

This is an old scam

She added that customers are then requested to transfer the amount into an account that they’re falsely informed is a Telkom account. “However, this account is obviously held by the fraudsters,” cautioned Letlape.
Wasn't FICA suppose to stop this, now it seems it just made it easier.
“It must be stressed that Telkom does not conduct its business this way where reimbursements are made into subscribers’ bank accounts.”
Yup, Telkom DOES NOT DO reimbursements. Must we educate people again?
“Finally, members of the public are urged to contact Telkom’s fraud hotline on 0800 124 000 or the nearest police station in order to report suspicious behaviour, advised Letlape.
Can anybody help me out here, which one of these are the least corrupt? :p

Don't you know she doesn't pay her own bills.

Either they got all your details from Telkom or they have a very sophisticated network of very connected individuals that can simultaneously get your details from Telkom, your bank details and which account Telkom takes money from, either through Telkom or through a bank statement which the bank is not allowed to give. Which option involves the least number of variables here? ;)

Just called and told them of the Telkom scam LuLu LaLa is trying to pull on innocent victims, there is something like "suspicious behaviour" with this announcement so I called as she requested as who the devil will refund cash that is not yet shown in their bank account! How stupid can someone be! and if there is cash deposited draw it quickly and place in another account (or scam them back give them a false cheque). Then the bank is to blame for the error and the criminals still have nothing! You have to become a criminal to beat a criminal it seems!

Also watch out for people buying goods with cheques or even direct deposits as they falsify those slips as well. Don't do any transaction if the money is not reflected on your bank statement or in the case of a cheque after 10 days when it has cleared.
If your buying something second hand or from an untrusted person don't hand over anything or deposit any money until you have the goods in your possession.
This can cause problems so it's better to complete such transactions with cash.

It is not always stupid people who fall for this kind of thing. If the money gets deposited through a cheque the amount will be shown on your bank statement. It would just not be available to use or withdraw. Most people overlook the little detail telling you that the cheque is not cleared yet and that you actually don't have the money yet.

I think the banks are partly or even completely to blame for this. Ever since the 10 day clearance period was introduced due to the high rate of fraud it has become exceptionally hard to try and pull one on the bank as it gets rejected in the end. This has led to the situation where the banks are no longer worried about depositing fraudulent cheques as in the old days and where they no longer implement effective measures to guard against it. As always the responsibility and risk now lies with the customer holding the account instead of with the greedy banks who so happily take the cheque in the first place without even making the customer properly aware that it is only a cheque that still has to be cleared and that there wasn't any money deposited yet.

Very good point which helps the investigation: it must be Telkodemonopolies' payroll department that sold LooLooPoo's bank account details to fraudsters...

Well, considering that it is Telkom which effectively pays her Telkom account, the fraudster was actually targeting Telkom. This makes the whole issue null and void as you can not defraud an expert fraudster. :p

Thats why I stated DRAW the money. If you cant it not yours yet!

Ok, but if I can draw it then I can transfer it as well. They are obviously targeting people here that have some spare money in their account already or else their available balance would not allow them to transfer the money.
