Telkom warns over Eskom load shedding

One parastatal as useless as the other... Where is your redundancy?

I honestly think LNOs (large network operators) should actually be obligated to be net zero power users and satisfy their full consumption of electricity using "clean" "sustainable" (in the ecowarrior sense ...) on a capacity by capacity basis - so Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, CellC, Neotel, SABC, Naspers etc ... would all need to produce the amount of electricity which they consume either by taking facilities off the grid or by investing in plants.

Of course the thinking is routed in the privilege which iECN licence holders have ... So maybe having big wads of spectrum should be conditional upon self-provisioning ...

However this nonsense that Telkom should spend billions on running gennies when Eskom cocks up is idiotic

As a listed company Telkom has an obligation to its shareholders to communicate potential issues, hence the WARNING. The State is the largest single shareholder but there is a 60% block of non-State shareholders.
 
Yeah "non-state", just cos the gravy train doesn't own it officially doesn't mean the same fat KFC greased fingers aren't in the pie... If it was truly 60% private shareholders wouldn't let it mess up so bad. Fat cats collecting dividends on the other hand don't give a ****.

indeed but the same problems apply relying on Eskom

my point is that network operators are a special type of electricity consumer and when you add data centres and their need to control their energy supply so they are ideally suited to develop power production strategies. There is a small price arbitrage at play.

Google is a massive investor in energy.
