Hi all,

I need some advice please.
They stole our lines , I Lost count of all the times.
So what i did, i applied for Telkom Wimax placed the order and they told me they will notify me when they will come and install it.
The reason for applying for wimax is, Telkom told me they don’t know if they are going to replace the lines.

Well yesterday round 15:00 everything started to work again. Internet and phone.

Know the big question should i still wait for the wimax installation or should i cancel it?

how much is the Wimax going to cost out of interest? I was trying to find wimax prices and info recently but could not find anything...

Simple if your wimax is faster as your current ADSL keep the wimax and ditch the ADSL, if you want faster speeds as the maximum from telkom wihich is 512 I say keep both adsl and wimax (and keep your wimax as backup if you can afford it it is only about R240,00 a month. (Your ISP accounts will work on both the adsl or wimax)

Currently I have only wimax, but I would like to have a faster access so I reapplied for ADSL (which they currently won't give to me due to the same problem of stolen cables) but at the moment i have adsl i will keep my wimax as a backup just in case the copper goes awol again

well as fas as i know there is a once off installation fee not sure i think it's R650 and you have your monthly fee of R240.

my current connection is a 384k line, the sound of a 512k line sounds faster but is it faster?

LOL your 512k line sounds faster? what does faster sound like, like whoosh? 512k is 128k faster but obviously thats only if your hardware working properly and for that you'll have to test it.

LOL it does sound funny. well what i actually would like to know, should i cancel the wimax and stick to the fixed line or should i take the wimax and cancel the fixed line?

If you in a good location and your Wimax is getting you your 512k then keep the Wimax. Casue with Wimax you don't have to pay for the closer telphone line.
So if you don't need the telephone then Wimax should work out cheaper, I think? I not so sure on prices. So Wimax cheaper and faster than 384k ADSL.
Of course your fixed line is nice cause if you decide to and can afford to you could then upgrade to 1mb,4,mb or 10 if your area supports it,which you can do with Wimax.

currently it's not about the cost off the wimax, it's more about the lines they keep on steeling then you sit without internet for a X amount of time and hope they will replace the lines again.
well currently i have the option for either one, the wimax entry lvl is 512k for not even a hundred rand more but will it be better than a 384k line?

Spoke to a person from telkom regarding the wimax and according to him you are able to upgrade from 512 to 4meg don't know if this is correct.

AFAIK, no installation cost. the 512 wimax will be faster. Do you use the telkom line as well or just the ADSL?

the lady told me there is a once off installation fee, but will just double check thanks for that.
i use the line 2, call free after ours. i think it's the close plan 2.

I would say, drop the adsl, keep the wimax and then just get telkom to give you voice over the wimax as well. I know someone else on this forum is doing it...

thanks for the advice, will phone them to get more info regarding the product and prices.

just out of curiosity

how are you getting wimax
i called telkom last week about it and they told me the service is on hold at the moment

I think if you keep on phoning, you will get someone that places an order for WiMax for you. :)

Yes I kept insisting i wanted wimax (telkom first didn't want to give it as they say i have adsl coverage in my area(but they keep stealing the copper) so after insisting i wanted it I got it finally. Just wish I could up it to a faster speed

I tried phoning 5 times or so with no luck. They say I'm under their coverage and one person even went so far as to say that they just need to issue the hardware, but then I get the inevitable "Management has informed me that we are not longer issuing this service". ADSL isn't an option for us, so this was my only hope. The alternative, according to Telkom, is 3G. Yeah, that's not going to work...

Do you just want to use it for online gaming? If not, then why not look at Iburst? Yes, I know they are more expensive, but if you can't get adsl or wimax, then this is the only service I can recommend.

Yeah, I've actually been considering it. Gaming would be nice, I have to admit, though I don't do a lot of that these days. More importantly is download capacity though. I hear people pull decent amounts on iBurst, but their reputation regarding billing and service levels leave much to be desired.
